Police dogs die in car during heatwave

THE RSPCA is investigating after two police dogs died when they were allegedly left in a dog handler's car during the heatwave.
The German shepherds were found in the car at Notts Police's headquarters in Arnold on Tuesday.

The Post understands the police dog handler was on duty but had called into the headquarters at Sherwood Lodge, Arnold and was in a private car.
It is unclear how long the dogs had been in the car on what was the hottest day in Notts for three years – with temperatures rising to 29.3 degrees celsius.

The RSPCA has launched an investigation into the incident.

What the hell was the officer thinking??

Re: Police dogs die in car during heatwave

One of the reasons as to when we swapped out the open top suzuki jeep we had we ensured the car we bought had at very least a sunroof and decent air-con...

One of our dogs is an ex-police dog (I won't mention the force involved) but we got him after he attacked his handler and put them in hospital with lacerations to arms and back. It was only afterwards we got word that the handler had attacked the dog with it's own food bowl Most police handlers love thier dogs and would never dream of putting them into harms way like this (doing thier duty is entirely another matter) but as in all professions there are some who should never be left in charge of anything

I agree mine won't even go in the car when it's like this, all they want to do is lie under the tree on the garden.

The officer or officers in question need their backsides taking down to PCSO and paying £6 per hour.

Poor dogs. You hear of things like this every year - Animal owners have got to be more careful. All my cats at the moment are suffering - they really hate this hot weather.

Went for a drive last night, late on with the air con on. Was loverly but I turned it off and I put the window down - when I put my hand out of the window, the air temp was very warm.

Re: Police dogs die in car during heatwave

sickening. Its not like its not widely known that dogs get to hot when left in vehicles what utter morons. (Note to Derek this would be the same if they were not old bill ) the fact that they are qualified (I guess) dog handlers make this even worse

Animal cruelty and jail term ring bells here, so if he keeps his job - he can consider himself lucky!

Re: Police dogs die in car during heatwave

It's not just dogs though, babies, children and even some vunerable adults can be left in a car with the aircon off and the windows up..

First hit on goolge is less than a month old and involves a 4month old who died in California

Re: Police dogs die in car during heatwave

There cannot be any excuse for this, as a police handler they should know better then anyone!!!!
Let’s hope the officer is charged with cruelty to animals. They would have died a very painful death!!!

They are paid the same all but as normal police IIRC they save money due to being not as well trained, wonder if the ptb have ever heard of getting what pay for....

The pay varies force by force but in the majority of places they are paid less than even the newest recruit to the 'proper' Police.

Anyway back on topic

This is terrible. I can only assume when the handler was called in on his day off he assumed it would be a 5 minute thing. Having two land sharks in the car makes me think one would be his current dog and one his retired dog.

It always happens in hot weather with people leaving dogs and children in cars. Hopefully the publicity will make people think twice about risking it so at least something positive happens from this.

Re: Police dogs die in car during heatwave

This is a tragedy but these things happen. Accidents and mistakes happen to everyone. Just sometimes the consequences are worse for some than others.

It wasn't deliberate, it wasn't murder. The dog handlers take their dogs home each shift and are regarded as much as part of their families as civvies do with their pets. I'm sure the officers are gutted. I'm sure beating the crap out of them and ruining their careers and families won't bring the dogs back nor do any good, despite a large queue of volunteers. Parents who leave their kids in cars don't always get life for murder.

Its sad, its tragic, but its not a need for vengeance.

I doubt it was intentional but a misjudgement which has ended in tragic circumstances.
