Re: Pub smoking bid to be stubbed out
Stupid
I was on holoday the day before the ban came in, I could barely see the stage or breathe because of the smoke. The day after it was literaly a breathe of fresh air.
Every smoke though was hanging round the doors though, several people where there the whole night with a ciggy.

Re: Pub smoking bid to be stubbed out
They found a loophole and were exploiting it until a rival pub grassed them up. As for Hom3r etc, these were likeminded people enjoying likeminded activities. They aren't trying to ruin everyone's holiday. There is plenty of room for smokers and non-smokers.
p.s. I'm a non-smoking asthmatic, but i'm also a libertarian.

Re: Pub smoking bid to be stubbed out
why not have pubs that are smoking and pubs that are non-smoking... or would that be too sensible?

Yep. It's not like people were smoking in the main bar & affecting non-smokers. The "smoking research centre" was a totally separate room, with smokers only. There were no issues with non-smoking staff, as due to poor takings the pub's only staff are the couple who run it.
[It was discussed on the Jeremy Vine Show this afternoon]

The landlady exploited a loop in the system reminds me of a few other people who've done this.

Re: Pub smoking bid to be stubbed out
I thought at the time a total ban was stupid and i still do there is room for all groups here rather then one group getting what it wants and another losing completely. This lady was trying to survive and found a way that upped her takings proving that despite what some say and the ban has mae no difference it has and not for the good for a lot.

It would... Unfortunately a lot of anti-smokers don't support choice.
I don't smoke, but I do support people's right to smoke, as long as there is consideration for people who don't like smoking. As such, I do support smoking rooms.

Re: Pub smoking bid to be stubbed out
The point of the smoking ban is to discourage people from smoking. The bill was ill-thought out, I will grant you (for example the definition of an enclosed public place caused confusion). But the essence is to make it uncomfortable for people to smoke, and therefore easier to give up.

Re: Pub smoking bid to be stubbed out
And all it's done is stifled the pub trade because people who smoke won't go out if they have to stand in the pouring rain to have a cigarette, and pubs have to spend a fortune which they don't have to provide outdoor comforts such as patio heaters

Re: Pub smoking bid to be stubbed out
She'll probably be in for a hefty fine unless she cuts it out.
I don't smoke, but i do work for a stop smoking service and i support people's right to smoke (its their choice!). But this lady is clearly exploiting a rather dodgy loophole which will only cost her in the end - how many of her customers will cough up (sorry!) with help with her fine? Or how many of them will get on the spot £80 fines also?
