Police to have tracking devices fitted
Quote:
Dave Benfield, general secretary of Norfolk Police Federation, said: "If it was used in the Big Brother spying context we would have some problems with that.
"It shouldn't be assumed that an officer is doing something wrong if, for example, they have remained in one location for an unusually long period of time. There may be perfectly legitimate explanation for that.
Tracking systems are also being fitted to police vehicles as part of the scheme, costing more than £250,000.

Agreed, its probably bacon butties and a cup of tea over here
As for the tracking system well lots of companys use these in their vehicles anyway and it could be good for the police to know exactly were their people are when needed.

There's bound to be some police themselves that won't like being tracked all day though.

This could be a good thing because if something major happens a quick glance at a screen will let the control room which units they can deploy for a quick response.

It's not as if before when they were asked if they could assist, they said they were no where near the area. was it?

Re: Police to have tracking devices fitted
In their cars and vans i don't have a problem but on the individual officers themselves i do. I often stop and talk socially to the local police officer when he walks our road and if this device was fitted and he was worried he couldn't be stationary for any length of time we wouldn't have our chats and the one's he has with others in the community. In that way while sounding good this could damage the meagre community policing that seems to be starting to happen in my area and many of us are thankful and grateful that it is happening.

Good point Rizzy, its precisely because the foot policeman does have time for a chat that he gets to know and be known by the community he operates in, any change to this would be counter productive in my view.

Re: Police to have tracking devices fitted
strange most police cars are already track-able if not tracked already as they have TETRA on board
the police themselves could be tracked via this system to but as far as i am aware it was agreed it wouldn't be used that way
though to as far as i know it is possible for an officer to switch the tracking system on on the set if they so wish

Re: Police to have tracking devices fitted
Its a total non-story.
The far more interesting part is this from the Telegraph
Quote:

The system was introduced after the force closed 29 of its 35 response stations. However, Chief Constable Ian McPherson said the move should improve coverage as vehicles spend more time on patrol.

Thats a lot of local coverage and knowledge disposed of.
