G20 Protests

There are growing fears for the safety of people making their way to work on 1 and 2 April. A spokesman for the London Chamber of Commerce said: "Businesses might want to consider asking their staff not to dress in a suit and tie as a lot of the protesters say they're going to target bankers. Staff should check they have their security passes and think about staggering their start and finish times. They might want to postpone for a few days meetings which aren't absolutely necessary."

Very uncool. I work pretty much at the heart of all these protests. Going to be a crappy day and a very busy tube...

Re: G20 Protests
Totally ridiculous, any sympathy that the public at large have with this cause, and I'd imagine at present its a great deal, will evaporate as soon as these morons bring chaos to central London. Who's advising them...Bin Laden.

Re: G20 Protests
Um, there's always a police/state disinformation campaign about how the world's going to be turned upside down by lunatics at these events. It justifies a lot of security theatre and (as at Kingsnorth and Heathrow) a lot of police heavy handedness gets ignored by the media because, of course, we all knew they had it coming, because the police told us. See also the continual and deliberate underestimates of numbers at anti-war protests. The aim is to frighten off the nice people and give the impression to the world that there's a small bunch of trouble makers and the rest of us are really happy with what Gordon and Dave have in store for us.
Thus is peace and liberty and freedom maintained. Don't believe it. Ask yourself whether the police are protecting you, the citizen, or the *****s who screwed the world up in the first place and gave you the bill.
Of course, it's quite probable that some of the protesters are actually police on the inside...
I'll get my tinfoil hat.

We do see these protests occur in other places though, They do get a bit rowdy and over the top. This has occurred in many countries

Re: G20 Protests
Sadly I foresee a whole lot of trouble and destruction with a whole raft of anarchists, trouble makers and general rabble rousers exploiting this golden opportunity to cause mayhem and destruction.
I heard a university Professor on the news last night explaining how it was entirely justified for offices to be broken into if lights had been left on unnecessarily. It may be a worthy aim to cut down on energy consumption but will those who stoop to that sort of action be made accountable for any damage they do and any which results from those breaches of security? Will people like him condemn the massive waste and destruction of resources their actions will cause? Somehow I doubt it....
These people like to pick and choose which laws they obey and you can be sure they'll waste no time using/exploiting other laws to get themselves off the hook. They like to have their cake and eat it and in many respects they're no better than the people and institutions they condemn.

If they start going down this route, sooner or later people are going to die. That blood will be on their hands and when caught they should face the full weight of the law.

Re: G20 Protests
I'm sure there will be police on the inside but I doubt very much they'll be doing much inciting.

Re: G20 Protests
Well it seems like a certain professsor is being held accountable for his words...
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/f...s-comment.html
Suspended on full pay? I thought that sort of 'punishment' was reserved for the sort of City fat cats he evidently despises... Perhaps, however, our learned friend will take the moral high ground, admit the error of his ways and decide to resign and give up his pension....
I wonder how he'll feel if a mob of people pitch up at his home next week and trash it simply because they don't like what he's supposed to have done..

Re: G20 Protests
No matter how strongly you feel about something you never have the right to harm innocent people. There is certainly no justification for property damage in the name of any cause. This like many events will be a rallying cry to the thug element that don't care one bit about whatever agenda they will go simply lured by the possibility of some "action" they can be involved in and i hope that any violent activity is put down heavy handedly by the police with convictions and custodial sentences afterwards.

Re: G20 Protests
I'm going to see if I can work from home those 2 days.
From what I understand there are going to be protests more or less right outside my work - we got an email from our security people telling us to be careful and avoid using any of the shops in the area our building is in.

..and apart from being criminally funny at times your crime is what??... Earning a living presumably....
Why should ordinary, law abiding people like you be harrassed, intimidated and/or even injured by those with an anti-capitalist, anti law and order agenda?
These people have the gall to whine about the wrongs being done by the targets of their action yet don't seem unwilling to accept that much of what they do is just as unfair and unjustifiable.
