Mars probe set for risky landing
Quote:
An American spacecraft is about to attempt a perilous landing on the surface of Mars.
Nasa's Phoenix lander is due to touch down on Sunday GMT in the far north of the Red Planet, after a 680-million-km (423-million-mile) journey from Earth.
The probe is equipped with a robotic arm to dig for water ice thought to be buried beneath the surface.
Scientists say the mission should give the clearest indication yet of whether Mars could once have harboured life.

Re: Mars probe set for risky landing
I predict it'll end up in a million pieces very soon then. Or they'll lose it, it'll be one of the other anyway.

Yup, EDT (New York Time) is four hours behind UTC/GMT, add on one hour for BST.

Hope they have fully comprehensive insurance - can you imagine the insurance accident report if it winds up having a collision with Beagle 2.

But I do hope I'm wrong though.
It has to be said it is amazing to be able to communicate and and control something over all those millions of miles away and for that to send data all the way back.
It can do all that yet I still can't get Ch5.

Re: Mars probe set for risky landing
Martian soil frustrates Phoenix
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7442233.stm
Quote:
Scientists working on Nasa's Phoenix lander are trying to work out why a soil sample dropped on to an instrument bay was not registered.
Images sent back from Mars clearly show the sample lying across a screen protecting the opening to a tiny oven.
But it seems the soil may have been too lumpy to pass through into the Thermal and Evolved-Gas Analyzer.
|
Hmm! I can help wondering why this DIDN'T crop up as a problem BEFORE they went to the expense of sending out the Lander to Mars.
