Obama accuses Bush of accusing him of appeasement
With the Democratic nomination looking reasonably secure for Obama the republicans have fired the first negative attack at him. Bush said that Obama's desire to talk to groups like Hamas is akin to the appeasement of the Nazis, such as Chamberlain did with Hitler in Munich. He did this in Israel, which I think is no accident.

Not only is this a real dirty and unfair attack, but it's also illogical. Hamas are not akin to Nazi Germany in any way, the entire thing is different, the only apt comparison you could make is to the IRA. It's a weak comparison but certainly better than Nazi germany and the only reason that analogy was not used was because talking to the IRA did work.
There is also a difference between talking to groups like Hamas and appeasement. Does Bush know what appeasement is? Do Americans? What Chamberlain did was appeasement (although he should not be demonised for trying, it's easy attack that in hindsight) but what Obama and Carter are advocating is simply entering a dialogue with a group that controls palestinian.
It's a long time till November..

Can a mod correct the title? "Bush accuses Obama of appeasement" would be fine or at least the correction of Chamberling to Chamberlain. Cheers

More akin to Tony Blair talking to Jerry Adams or Reagan talking to Gorbachev and look where that led...

Obama doesn't actually have a desire to talk to Hamas - he has only said that he would be willing to talk to Iran's President.
The story you've linked to doesn't actually mention Obama at all - and reads to me more like Bush is criticising Jimmy Carter, seeing as Ex-President Carter *has* actually talked to Hamas.
Although Obama has still taken it as an attack on him:

Well Iran would surely be part of the appeasement thing bush was talking about? McCain has also accused Obama of being the favoured candidate of Hamas

Doubts about Obama with Jewish Americans were stoked by Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee in the 2008 presidential election, when he recently charged that Obama is the favored candidate of Hamas.

Re: Obama accuses Bush of accusing him of appeasement
George Bush is a bloody idiot though. Example: if you want the Saudis to go against their national interest* and boost oil production to help the American public fill their SUVs, don't go to Israel first and tell the Knesset how wonderful they are. The sheikhs don't like that sort of thing. Not surprising they told him to eff off, frankly.
* Keeping it in the ground keeps the price high. It's not like it goes off if you don't pump it out, and oil prices are only going to get higher.
