Catch-up reading scheme 'success'

Talk about going round in circles....I could have told anyone for free that the best way to get slow learners to read better is to spend more time teaching them to read on a one to one basis.

It is what was done more than 40 years ago when I was in the education system myself.

Agreed - the phrase "stating the obvious" springs to mind.

We always read to our children from when they were very little (including bedtime stories), and as they got older, they would read the stories to us.

Re: Catch-up reading scheme 'success'

I remember one of the first reading lessons i had at primary school were these card things that you fed through a machine and it told you the word god i loved that thing so much more fun then the book itself. This is another non story for new labour and their whole "arn't we doing well" rubbish. Sensible people that don't live in westminster have been onto this little fact for quite a while and are not surprised that it works but well done all you MP's isn't it nice to learn new things every now and then.

Re: Catch-up reading scheme 'success'

Gone are the days when kids would come home from primary school on their first day with a tobacco tin full of words on cards to learn

Ahhh... those were the days... and yes, I remember my tobacco tin full of words on cards (even though thats 34 years ago )

Memories...

The government-funded Reading Recovery gives six-year-olds tailored coaching from specially-trained teachers for half an hour a day for 12 to 20 weeks.

That says a lot for the current teaching profession.

I disagree, it is a comment on their training, not their competence, you have to remember most teachers graduating now are products of the education system themselves - the change has been an over-reliance on 'measurement' of their subsequent 'performance' via SATS, OFSTED, etc

- in my opinion the 'personal' approach is what I got from my teacher when he/she didn't have to justify my sats level, or conform to a 'curriculum', but that shouldn't say 'specialists' aren't required, now???

Could not have said it better myself.

I noticed a definite change from lower years to higher years, from one-on-one to 35 kids, everyone must be the same.

Re: Catch-up reading scheme 'success'

The report is talking about six year old children for Christ’s sake, I would have thought that most parents with no training could manage that if they could just drag themselves, and their children, away from the box for a short time each week, I know my Mother did.

My first two schools were C of E, they produced very poor results but in those days a Teacher had a job for life regardless of competence, not that anyone was ever tested once they had taken up their vocation.
My third school was a Secondary Modern, I would say that 20% of the teachers were very good with the others not worth a light. Four years of music lessons and not one person in the class had a clue at the end. Luckily, and it probably was luck, we had excellent teachers for Maths, Science and Engineering, funnily enough most people did well in those subjects.

We get the same BS about the dedicated people in the Health Service, I have had a lot of dealings with people in the Health Service due to the poor health of my Mother.
My Mother went to A&E with a broken arm, she went in with her wedding ring and two diamond rings on her hand and came out after having a temporary cast put on, minus all the rings. An investigation failed to find them. My Sister was telling her friend about it, her friend had exactly the same experience with her Mother, she advised us to put in a claim as she had done, eventually after much delay and fobbing off my Mothers claim was accepted.

Social Services, again manned by dedicated people wishing to help the old and vulnerable.
My Mother used to have two carers come in to see to her meals, washing and cleaning, £14 ph each.
When small items go missing you tend to think that they have been mislaid, one day they had the local Vac and Washer shop come and remove two washing machines, a nice little earner that would have gone unnoticed with many elderly people. A complaint to Social Services was met with a stone wall, nobody was interested.
Then there was the time they somehow managed to split the toilet cistern causing water to pour through to the living room ceiling, after jamming a toilet brush into the cistern they ran off without telling anyone.
I won’t go on about the key safe she has fitted outside her house, this is to allow access in an emergency, my Mother lives on a busy main road with lots of people passing at all hours, just to say that leaving the safe open is not unknown, together with losing the key and failing to mention it.

It’s only when you have to deal with these people that you discover the total incompetence inherent in a system where people don’t get sacked for being useless or worse.
Is it any wonder that I now find myself talking down to so called “Dedicated People”.
