If I lived anywhere else, i'd say its unbelieveable. However, living in England as I do, sadly its completely believeable.

Re: Another airport security check debacle?

Yes I can see it now - a future BBC headline:

"Bin Laden Arrested Airside at Heathrow"

The Home Office is to launch a wide ranging security review after Osama Bin Laden was found working airside at Europe's busiest airport. Having not been seen in person for some years, Bin Laden was apparently cleared to work at Heathrow in 2003 after only cursory security checks on his immigration status and job application were carried out. Apparently his name, characteristic beard, traditional attire, AK47 and hand grenade belt did not arouse the suspicions of the authorities, a spokesman for whom pointed out that "we have loads of foreigners working here and they all look the same...."

As I work in the same office space as an Airport Security department (although I don't work for Security myself), I can vouch for the absolute truth in this article !

Hmmmm.... this would be one of the guys of whom the then Home Secretary Jack Straw promised would be:

....deported “as soon as reasonably practicable” and said he was “utterly determined that nobody should consider that there can be any benefit in hijacking”.*

Well I'm sure being a cleaner at Heathrow is no picnic but it's hardly punishment is it?....

Apparently he was stopped on suspicion of driving an unlicensed mini-cab and arrested for allegedly breaching bail over an assault charge. **

Hang on a minute.... I've just twigged it....... the hijackers' real punishment WAS being allowed to stay here!!!

Oh I heard a customs official claiming, during an interview with Jacquie Smith the other day, that airport customs staff are being moved to 'higher profile' immigration duties to assuage public opinion, leaving major gaps in the checking of baggage..... Wouldn't be the first time HMG's tried that trick would it?...
