Fighting crime over the telephone
So much for the idea that reporting crime is a waste of time..

Re: Fighting crime over the telephone
I never knew it was so big and succesful. Plus I only thought it was for major crimes, and the like.
Quote:
Calls to Crimestoppers lead to, on average, an arrest every 90 minutes. Every five days, information from Crimestoppers leads to a murder charge.
And in two decades Crimestoppers has helped put nearly a thousand killers behind bars, and recovered drugs and stolen goods worth a quarter of a billion pounds.
Two years ago, Crimestoppers launched its "most wanted" web page, and says the response has been staggering: 400 of those featured have been tracked down and arrested - that's a result every other day.
|
That's seriously impressive statistics. Who knows what percentage of that would have been succesful without them?

Re: Fighting crime over the telephone
A LOT of drunk drivers are caught that way. Plus a whole host of other crimes solved thanks to their help.

Re: Fighting crime over the telephone
I take they give police leads to follow rather than be used as evidence in court?

Yep. All their calls are anonymous but it's quite helpful for the Police to be told stuff they wouldn't ordinarily hear.
There is also a few places in the UK that wouldn't dream to telling the Police something but contacting Crimestoppers is an OK alternative.

I thought that would be case, Excellent Idea, the certainty of remaining anonymous no matter what is something they should never stop.

Good question.Could be that the directly reported crime has no obvious suspects to be named but through crimestoppers guaranteed anonymity people are more likely to 'finger' someone that they are afraid of reporting openly.

Nearly everyone hates the police anyway, so plenty of people wouldn't want to deal with them or would expect them not to follow it up properly, regardless whether they actual do or not. As Crimestoppers is independent, they are seen as a trustworthy alternative.

Nearly everyone? Surely not? I don't dislike the police at all. Then again, i've only felt done wrong to once in my life by them, an that was because my bike was stolen, dunno what i was expecting though tbh, how would they be able to find it? lol
