I know a lot of older people who don't bother to report crime anymore mainly because they believe (with some justification) that nothing will be done and/or they'll be victimised by those responsible. When Brown keeps harping on about crime being down he's way of track - reported crimes may be down but unreported crime is a different story and everyone knows it.

I don't want this to sound as patronising as it will probably come out. But I think people underestimate the amount of feeling against them unless you're really part of it. My dad was a copper and my brother and mother were specials. some of my friends are also coppers. So I am probably more tuned to it than most. I was supposed to go into the specials but didn't mainly because of it. I did change my mind and lose weight once, but decided not to put my life on the line for a bunch of people who'll hate my guts. Whether i'll change my mind again, I don't know.

Most people think that the police are corrupt, inept, racist, uncaring or some combination of the above. Just going on CF alone you don't need to look very far to find some examples.

"nearly everyone" "most people". I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. Pehaps the feelings towards the police are worse in some areas than others (your own area for example), but I cannot believe that nearly everyone hates the police.

Well, that's just my perception. I'm sure everyone else will have their own which might be stronger or weaker. That's their prerogative as is mine.

Hmmm!

I think the truth is somewhere in the middle.That police are not hated by everyone it's just that we are very wary of the police who live in our community and those that we are 'friends' with because as we all know a policeman/woman is never really off duty.It's that we are uncomfortable that we may inadvertently step over some invisible line because our knowledge of the law is not necessarily as up to date and is completely erroneous at times .

With an anonymous phone call we can avoid that uncomfortable feeling.
