New National Anthem?
A while ago there was talk of changing our national anthem to Land of Hope and Glory, I must admit that I feel it would be a great move. The present "dirge" we have "God save the Queen", is such a dull tune, where as Hope and Glory gets every Brits blood running

Re: New National Anthem?
Im quite fond of God save the Queen, it just reeks of Britain. This song is random and without meaning at the start and only gets remotely patriotic at 3mins.

Oh! I agree...
National anthem verse 2&3 anyone? It's kind of 'stately' though...
My alternative replacements, after Land of Soap and Gravy (truly chest-puffing and flag-waving stuff)
would be 'Jerusalem'..................... as in "Bring me my bow of burning gold...................In England's green and pleasant land: Blake & Parry.
and 'I vow to thee my country' :Spring-Rice & Holst.... not very rousing and has a difficult vocal range.
I would say - anything that everyone could join in with, and patriotically mean it, would be good.

Reeks of Britain, not England, typically we don't have one, if forced into giving the English one I'd choose Land of Hope and Glory or the WWII song There'll Always be an England either one would be good imo and as for God Save the Queen if sung right it is really rousing but then, how many people can actually sing properly, not many so it is imo pretty dull.

Re: New National Anthem?
Land of Hope and Glory for me - God Save the Queen is almost as bad as Flower of Scotland.

Re: New National Anthem?
As a British anthem I see nothing wrong with God Save the Queen - regardless of devolution and whether you're a royalist or not, she unites us all, sometimes in pride, sometimes in contempt

Re: New National Anthem?
I'd much prefer one of these...
Anthem no.1
Anthem no.2

Re: New National Anthem?
or you could write something brand new. I think it would be cool to be the guy or lady who wrote the national anthem

Re: New National Anthem?
I'd like the Sex Pistols' version of GSTQ, please, but if you want an English anthem I'd not look farther than Jerusalem, which has great words and a great tune. Frankly, Jerusalem would be a lot better off built in, say, a field outside Hemel Hempstead rather than in that godforsaken sandpit where it is now, so it's progressive too.
Rule Britannia is inaccurate now the French Navy have a nuclear powered aircraft carrier bigger than anything we have. 'Britannia Rules The Waves As Long As The French Don't Start Anything' doesn't scan. Mind you, we've got an acknowledged advantage in submarines, so 'Britannia Rules The Bit Between The Waves And The Bottom*' would work.
Land Of Hope And Glory is best left at the Proms where it belongs.
* 'As Long As The Yanks Aren't Around'

Re: New National Anthem?
How about Land of Burkas and Minarets? Will show how far we have progressed as a nation.
