Travellers-can they be accomodated in our society?
See
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljboUyYQIio
I do respecdt their right to roam and in some ways, i think there is a lot to be said for their lifestyle.
Just think of it,every day the scenery can change and your neighbours can change.
No ties, no council tax,no gas, electric and water bills. Yes i do kinda envy their carefree lifestyle.
I mean, whats to stop any of us taking to the open road? We could still kepp our existing jobs but our expenditure would suddenly plummet. We'd all be much better off financially.
Gorger life is so samey. The same view out the windows, the same troublesome neighbours, the same bills coming through the same letter box....and then you die.
I wish i could join the travellers. Does anyone know how?

It only works if they respect other peoples rights and property, they don't so they shouldn't be accomodated.

You could nick all the drain covers nearby to sell for scrap and buy a knackered old transit with no MOT and insurance. That would be a start.

That's a rather prejudiced view. I'm sure that not all travellers lack respect for other people's property.

Show me an example of a traveling community that doesnt fit my view. By other peoples property i mean public as well as private, so illegal dumping is not respecting other peoples land for example

"That's a rather prejudiced view. I'm sure that not all travellers lack respect for other people's property." Thats a rather naive view i have not in all the years i have dealt with pikey's met any that had anything but their own interests and money at heart. I have no problem with travellers i have a problem with people that call themselves travellers and never bloody go anywhere.

That sounds like a contradiction. On one hand you are disagreeing with me and saying that I am naive to suggest that not all people that call themselves travellers are disrespectful, and then you say it's only one element of the 'traveller' community that you have a problem with. I don't think that I am being naive, I am being open minded to the possibility that everyone is not the same.
Tarring all travellers with the same brush is not good, in the same way that not all old people are miserable gits who barge their way on to buses and teenagers are not all yobos.

Re: Travellers-can they be accomodated in our society?
When I was a kid we used to have two of the old fashioned gypsy caravans drawn by horses come round our way every summer, the old boy would sharpen your knives and if you had any old pots or pans he would take them off your hands. These two old caravans were proper gypsies in my opinion, never in one place for more than a few days, but the so called travellers that are about nowadays, they are a totally different story. It seems to me that most of them are travelling dole scroungers, causing an eyesore wherever they go. So if I were to buy a beat up old transit then turn up in say Cornwall, the council are obliged to find a site for me? Ridiculous, and guess who's paying for this lifestyle?

Interestingly Tewkesbury council are also very soft on travellers, they openly have a 'policy of tolerance' towards travellers. When I worked for a company in that area the travellers turned up, smashed the barriers on the car park and set themselves up in the car park. They tried to gain entry to the building through the day by an open window.
The council were not interested, but as we were a list X government site the building was closed so the police could move in to move them on immediately. ( I understand after we left the police turned up with their riot gear)
The council was not amused and I understand were extremely annoyed that they were kicked up the backside from higher government level to get the mess cleared up. I understand that tax paying farmers in that area have taken the law into their own hands to remove travellers because the 'tolerant' council will not take any action, but when the travellers decide to move on they slap an order on the private land owner to clear up 'his' mess that has been left behind.
