Yet more dithering by Brown?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7339580.stm
He was interviewed on TV recently and confirmed he'd be attending the ceremon ies. Now he's claiming he never intended to go to the opening
If he'd never intended to go to the opening ceremony why didn't he just make that clear in the first place? Perhaps that's asking too much of a PM.

Re: Yet more dithering by Brown?
I dunno really. If Brown wants to be seen to be doing the right thing, then why does Downing St specifically say he's not boycotting it? Its probably a coincidence.
If he was dithering he wouldn't be the only one. I think the China protests have really suprised a lot of people, myself included. China have historically always been given an easy ride over their human rights record. I mean if people were that affronted by it, why not say something before? China were awarded the games years ago, and their position on human rights violations hasn't changed.

I think everyone was expecting the China would get better by now, and at this stage, especially with the Tibet issue, people have had enough. The Olympics are also being used by China as a self-promotional tool to help them on the world stage and everyone is saying that, no, you are not a respected figure on the world stage while your oppressing your own people.

However, he will be at the closing ceremony when the Olympic baton will be passed to London.

He doesn't really need to go to the closing ceremony either. By 2012 we won't be able to afford the gas to keep the flame alight.

Re: Yet more dithering by Brown?
All this dithering by Brown has set me thinking - Bliar had his anthem "Things Can Only Get Better" so maybe Brown needs one for the next election.
What could be more appropriate than:

"We believe that this is a dispute that should be resolved," a spokeswoman for No 10 said.........
Well it's nice to see Gordon promptly flexing his muscles and acting so decisively on a matter of such national importance

Re: Yet more dithering by Brown?
Gordon Brown has truly turned in to the more hype then substance entity i can remember all the labour supporters saying how he was next only to god. Since he has become PM the guy has been a total disaster how to ruin a decade of reputation building in so short a time and after he gets the job he plotted and schemed so long to get. I mean if you can't do it right after all his planning take the hint and go quietly before looking a complete moron to absolutely everyone not just us poor sods in the UK.

Re: Yet more dithering by Brown?
These last few months have really highlighted the difference between Blair and Brown. Blair would never have constantly 'dithered' and backtrack whenever anyone opposed him, the moment something could be unpopular and cost votes Brown backs down.
You can't have a prime minster that gives in to every headline, Brown is far to worried about losing the election he shows no spine or conviction. As a result he will almost certainly lose.

Re: Yet more dithering by Brown?
Let's hope so!!!
The fact that there is potentially serious fuel crisis ahead and he seems to be doing/saying nothing about it says it all for me - he just doesn't know what to do and couldn't lead a dog!
Put Baroness 'Iron Lady' Thatcher in the 'ring' with Gordon 'Iron Fist' Brown and I know who my money would be on - she'd wipe the floor with him.

Well I did post a thread on the global threat to mankind of jellyfish - maybe he's acting as their vanguard.
and what's Brown got to say about all this?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/7367488.stm
Not a lot it seems ............
and I wondered why people were queueing at the local petrol stations this evening....

Re: Yet more dithering by Brown?
To be fair it must be hard to have wanted the Job for so long and then watch your power and your re-election chance diminish. Just because your too scared to actual risk those things...
