Scuffles mar Olympic torch relay
Funny how the human rights protesters ignore the torch carriers right to carry it.

Funny how someone tries to trivialise forced sterilisation, forced repatriation, torture, abuse and killing of people in their homeland with carrying a stupid ceremonial torch!

Funny how the Olympic authorities awarded the Games to one of the most repressive regimes in the world.Talk about looking the other way.

On the other hand, the human rights situation in China is very much in the public eye as a result of China hosting the Olympics.

But only because of Tibet starting the ball rolling by protesting and being repressed. If that hadn't happened then these protests wouldn't be happening.Otherwise nothing much would have been said about anything and the money making would have proceeded in a much quieter manner and everyone would have been looking the other way still.

Possibly. It is also possible that the Tibetans decided to start the protests because of the upcoming Olympics. Personally, I think the present attention for the human rights situation in China is a good thing (though I prefer to see peaceful protests).

Re: Scuffles mar Olympic torch relay
Perhaps if China bought their armaments from America and the UK the situation would be more tolerable, and less newsworthy.

Re: Scuffles mar Olympic torch relay
'mar?'
The references to 'Chinese security guards' in the media are interesting, apparently they're actually Chinese students in the UK who've been gee'd up by Beijing to stage, effectively, a counter-demonstration. With the support and protection of the Metropolitan Police, of course.

Re: Scuffles mar Olympic torch relay
I think we can all agree that America doesn't really give a toss about human rights in some far flung country most people couldn't even find on the map.
What is really bugging America is that for the first time in it's history another country can actually mass produce products cheaper and better than themselves.
America has been slow to move from manufacturing and as a result has been caught with their pants down.
All they can do now is to try to convince the world that China is an evil nation in the hope that people will boycott Chinese products.
As usual the UK is paying lip service to the yanks, so nothing new there.
