Parents MUST pay dead daughters rent

A County Armagh couple whose daughter died while at university in Liverpool have been told they must pay for her accommodation for the rest of the year.

The letting agent involved is claiming that because the girl's parents acted as guarantors on the lease, they are liable for the debt.

I don't agree with this. For one, their daughter died and a company are threatening to take legal action if they don't continue to pay her rent? I think it's shocking.

I agree with you. Is it not bad enough her parents have lost a daughter, but to be harassed about unpaid rent is just out of order IMO.

Absolutely outrageous, surly they could re-let the accommodation, how heartless can they get. Its not as if they are purposely trying to pull a fast one, shame on them.

Seems like this is a private letting agent and they probably wouldn't be able to let it at this late term of a uni year - not that it gives them any right to act as they have done. Hopefully the bbc story might make them back down.

Bad behaviour from the landlord, really out of order.

But then I read the quotes in the story and they are from a member of sinn fein? the political wing of the IRA?

So yes the letting agent should look to their conscience but come on, sinn fein talking about ruthlessness of the worse kind?

I would hope that if this went to court the judge would take one look and throw it out! I certainly would!

Political aleigences (spelt wrongly?) should have no bearing on it. They are just out to make money!

I hope that if this ever happened to the land lord that he/she would have to pay too! What goes around (should) comes around!!

So now even compassion is going out the window in the face of making a quid. It might be late but i gaurantee this grub will have that accomadation let long before the poor deceaseds tenacy would have been up. Show a little respect and compassion and back away quietly you nauseating little grub.

I feel really sad about, this and the heartless hyocrites (l hope that is how you spell it), this is how landlords act, my condolences to the faimly, however, l think that l have have a solution to this, if the family, go to the local county court, there is an old law, that states, if a person is deceased, the debt goes with them, and is enforcible by law, ( which would be the family ) when l was young, l lived in a house, in Chiswick, and my nan, who had the house, passed away. and we sought legal advice on this matter, and we were told, that we would not be held responsible for her debts, as it would breach a certain law, landlords are money grabbing gits.

Legally they're perfectly entitled to persue their money,

Morally they are scum, as are most (not all) landlords.

I shall most likely get flamed for posting this, and i was in two minds about posting it at all.

Obviously the situation is awfull and i wouldnt wish it on anyone, i cant imagine what the parents must be going through.

But at the same time, the landlord still has bills to pay, and could well have a mortgae on the house that needs to be paid. One of the reasons of having a fixed contract especially on a student house is its going to be very unlikely to get someone to move in part way through the year.
