Damages due over McCann stories
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7303801.stm
I've been looking for the aeronautic porcine all day...
Quote:

Four newspapers are set to pay damages to the parents of Madeleine McCann, after settling a libel case, the BBC has learned.
|
Quote:
|
Media commentator Roy Greenslade said that for two national newspapers to carry front-page apologies at the same time was "unprecedented".
|
I'll believe it only when I actually read it.
It has to be said that that so many people don't bother to sue newspapers who print defamatory articles about them, because they don't have the finances or the courage to do so.

I'm not but I do check headlines.
I note this rider from the above link though.

Maybe that's true but I bet they are relieved not to actually cope with comments that are too close to the bone.

Just the headlines eh? You sure you don't have a little peek inside from time to time?
Might it not also be that they're worried about the possibility of libellous comments being posted by readers still convinced that the McCann's have something to hide?

Re: Damages due over McCann stories
They shouldnt have said that the McCann's had something to do with the dissapearance of their daughter without any proof. What they should have printed, was that they were negligant in leaving their children in their hotel room while they went out for a room. That is a fact and pretty much means the same to me.

The only time I see the Express is at the Newsagents. They have a rule about people reading a paper and not paying for it.
Hubby buys The Times.I never read that either.I read very few newspapers. My favourite is Private Eye because it covers stories I would never read anywhere else.
I'm sure they are but it's mighty convenient all the same.

Re: Damages due over McCann stories
Wonder if they used the public's money to fund this libel case?

From the BBC article
"All four titles are published by the Express Newspapers group, which has agreed to all the McCanns' requests. It is also paying all their costs."
It never went to court - the lawyers probably took it on a no-win, no-fee basis, being so assured of victory.
Again, from the BBC article
" Media lawyer Paul Gilbert, from Finers Stephens Innocent, said the courts encourage early settlement of defamation cases.
"Clearly the Express' lawyers felt this was a case they should settle without a high-profile trial - which it would be - and as a result have saved considerable costs," he said. "

Yes, that's right - they have kidnapped their daughter, hidden her away, and been in the glare of world-wide publicity for nearly a year. They are obviously better at it than the Watergate conspirators.

Over half a million payout, I expect a lot of children in Oldham to disappear now.

Re: Damages due over McCann stories
Seriously though, some of the police findings and the amount of money they have made, it does raise questions.

Well until the Portuguese police pull their fingers out and the public prosecutor over there gets on and makes up his mind we will not know whether there is any evidence whatsoever against them..I suspect that that the actual outcome will be one in which the Portuguese authority will arrive at an outcome that clears them of negligence and ineptitude whilst still pointing the finger at the McCanns/the others they accused because they cannot/will not/have not found anyone else to accuse.
The media in general have not covered themselves in any kind of glory in this case.In fact I think they really showed us the true depths to which they had ALL sunk.

a) Police findings - if true (and all the other "findings" allegedly made by the police, which turned out to be rumour/speculation)
b) Amount of money they have made - they have not "made" any money; it is in a charitable appeal, which is managed and audited by others.
Those are the sort of statements/assertions that got the Express and Star in trouble - best be careful......
