A load of Balls ?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6918664.stm
Apparently Ed Balls reckons that ASBO's (yes the ones his colleagues introduced in 1998) are now a sign of failure and that it's up to the authorities to intervene earlier in "problem children's" lives and help them through whatever issues they face. That's all very well but it will seem to many that under New/Old/NearlyNew/SameOld Labour, ordinary law abiding people (children included) are left to struggle for much of what they need whereas those who all too often exist on benefits whilst causing mayhem, distruption and worse in the lives of the majority are deemed to require more state funded help.
Since his background is largely in economics maybe he thinks that money is the answer to everything. On the other hand, simply throwing vast sums of it at problems he and his ilk have created obviously isn't working!
Maybe Mr Balls should look closer to home for the real definition of failure: Failure is a government which has been in power for 11 years, still hasn't got a clue what it's doing and has virtually bankrupted this country (morally & economically) in the process.

I suppose the reason for ASBO's when aiming at kids was because they were causing problems. Due to that, it's surely the parents fault for them being like that?
But yes, maybe ASBO's arn't the answer. Something new might have to come into play.

It depends on what they mean by intervening. I don't think, at least I hope, it does not simply mean giving them benefits but approaching them while they are young and do it though the school system. Obviously you are never going to stop all problem but you might be able to stop some of them and it's better to do that early while you can prevent them getting to the stage where they need ASBO's

Re: A load of Balls ?
No matter how much money they decide to throw at this problem this latest fix needs manpower. The children and families outlined in this latest drive would need physical contact with some form of mentoring or outreach service for this to have half a chance of working but where are the physical resources going to come from?

An "assertive and persistent'' case worker would be assigned to each child to "grip" the family and ensure they all get suitable help, such as drug treatment or anger management.
|
How long will it take to train enough people to be case-workers for these children and families?. We hear stories that those Social workers currently employed are over worked as it is, so they will not be able to handle the increased workload..

The orders will be issued to about 1,000 of the country's worst-behaved children. Failure to stick to the contract could lead to a criminal record.

AGGGH! Chavs again, and it annoys me most when people say thinks like 'Teenagers theese days'. What about us! ITS THE BLUMMIN CHAVS! And also, ASBOs are the only achivements some chavs will ever get!

Callumpy we know that not all teenagers are like the ones being targeted as the subject of this thread. Unfortunately the bad ones make it difficult for the good ones. I dare say most of us have personal experience of teenagers who are a credit to themselves and, or despite, their parents.
All I can say to you is the same as I told my son, don't take the '' 'Teenagers these days' '' personally. I am sure you are intelligent enough to realise that the chav/asbo way of life has no long term value and believe me, as you get older, you will find yourself uttering the same clichés that we olduns vowed never to utter when we were in your age.
