Man attempts cable theft. Gets burned..
Derbyshire Police are looking for a badly scorched man after someone tried to cut and steal the main power line into a village called Cresswell. The village was plunged into darkness, and when they investigated, they found a hacksaw embedded in the cable, and a blowtorch nearby...

No idea if this guy is a potential Darwin Award winner, but if he isn't, he will be soon..
BTW, I put it in current affairs as it is current in more ways than one..

I'd give him his hacksaw back, personally. Add a suit of copper armour, then string the cable across a bog and tell him to help himself...

I wasn't suggesting sympathy. Admittedly, this is sick, but I found it funny.

I know the village and surrounding area fairly well(used to work in the village next door), they are all old pit villages with high unemployment, low skills/education and high crime.
I can understand it perfectly, probably smashed/stoned out of their head when they tried to do it.

I would tend to agree, either stoned out of their head or gypsies.
The gypsies are the main culprits around here for cable and stealing gates from peoples driveways, although there has been a lot of activity recently from the smack heads since the price of scrap has climbed.
These people don't work but sleep during the day and go out robbing at night, this is an activity that seems to be on the increase. It beats having a boring 9 to 5 job, you can work the hours to suit and be your own boss.

Watt's the world coming to? Don't these people have ohms to go to?
Bet he did a quick volte-face when the sparks flew...

Re: Man attempts cable theft. Gets burned..
Hmmm,co-incidentally i read this on the E-on website only last night. It defies belief that someone could not perceive that they would come to harm by doing such a thing.
I have some knowledge of the effects of high voltage electric transmission through the human body. Apart from the initial flash burns and the neurological damage, there is slighter delayed damage in which the human tissue slowly cooks from the inside out. In such cases, the treatment is to cut open the surface skin to allow the "cooking" damaged tissue some room to expand, otherwise the skin just bursts.
Once a period of time has elapsed and all tissue expansion stops, its time to cut away the damaged bits/limbs and salvage whats left. Very unpleasant, very stupid. I imagine he will be pitching up at a hospital A & E very soon.
