EU leaders sign landmark treaty

The treaty creates an EU president and a more powerful foreign policy chief.

The document, signed at a ceremony at the city's historic Jeronimos Monastery, also scraps veto powers in many policy areas.

It is a replacement for the EU constitution, which was abandoned following French and Dutch opposition.

EU leaders insist that the two texts are in no way equivalent.

But the Lisbon treaty incorporates some of the draft constitution's key reforms, and several governments face domestic pressure over the document.

Well, well, well Gorden Brown(a person not elected by the British people)signs away our rights and laws in one move, not even a vote was allowed for the people, don't forget the government work for us we should have the final say on matters like this not them, without a vote being made which adjusts and threatens the very way we live our daily lives.
What right did he and the government have in signing away the long standing laws of the uk in 1 lousy illegal way?
Because anything like this should be made up from a vote from the public to see what happens.
I've always hated this man he won't be in power much longer,Yet he signs away 100's of years of laws in 1 day and has been in power for 6 months.
Just think of all them lovely gypsies etc..coming over hear now taking up all the few jobs available of late
Pathetic.
What's everyones opinion on this?

Quote:
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown signed the treaty later in the day after missing the the ceremony, citing a prior engagement in the British parliament
The piece of s**t(sorry the language)didn't even have the balls to sign it in the public eye what a peice of crap this guy is.
I'm gobsmacked at this..........crazy.

What a sell out. Still should we really be surprised. What's the point of having election manifestos, and being bothered to vote, if the politicitians can do what they like without listening to their public. No wonder nobody bothers to vote at elections, the politicians don't care about joe public, just looking after themselves.

Guy Fawkes had the right idea, blow up parliament. Still it's superflous now anyway.

The point is to con the electorate into voting for inept and all too often, corrupt leeches who, if they were half as good at their jobs as they are at feathering their own nests, wouldn't have got us into this mess in the first place.

If it were only superflous things wouldn't be so bad! These people are steadily running this country into the ground and signing our rights away but you can bet their pay, perks and conditions will only improve!

What's the difference between Ted Heath, Margaret Thatcher and John Major who ALL signed treaties which "adjusts and threatens" our daily lives?

Quote:

The same way previous governments have. Because they have relied on their rights to sign treaties as part of our parliamentary democracy. You might say this is different because this time we were promised a referendum. But I'd say we were only promised a referendum because more of the public are aware of what being a member of the EU means. They were not when those other treaties were signed.

Quote:

I agree.

Gypsies have had the right as European Union citizens to live and work anywhere in the Union ever since the signing of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. And the Tories support the entry of Turkey into the EU.

And that hundreds of years of laws have been signed away was always going to happen; its an ongoing process that started when we joined. It's hardly news.

Quote:

I agree with you. It's pathetic, and it's almost the final nail in the coffin of British democracy, previous ones being driven in by Heath, Thatcher, Major and Blair. Dishonest, arrogant *****. But at least Thatcher later tried to put a stop to it.

I don't care who signed it. I care that it was signed at all! Do you really think it would have been different had it come up during a Tory government? The party barely squeaked when the Constitution was signed.

My apologies if you are not a Tory supporter.

Re: EU leaders sign landmark treaty

Politicians in this country really are awful. The problem is they all are - all parties.
Voting in this country boils down to voting in the party that will do the least damage to our country.

There is only one reason Gordon Brown voted this treaty in. Once he gets voted out in the next general election he will get a cushy un-elected job at Brussels, the place where all failed politicians go to get on the gravy train. It's great, you don't even have to worry about being voted out!
Mark my words, Tony Blair will be President of Europe for all his "help" selling us out.

They are all corrupt.

Well it had better be soon because the police state is growing right across Europe (and beyond) and it could easily make sure that public dissent is something only the brave, or those with nothing to lose, will consider.

In any case, would the public ever demonstrate en masse in sufficient numbers? They'd demonstrate if they were hungry, but for the loss of democracy, I can't see it.

Re: EU leaders sign landmark treaty

Regarding the immigrants - never mind their legality or lack thereof for the moment - EU law states they can move to any country in the EU, not just the UK. But my question is: are any of them actually doing so, or are they all coming here? Does any other EU country have this problem? If not, why not? Why aren't any of the others taking up some of the slack?

Apart from the obvious answer, viz. our government's made this country into an easy mark, that is?
