Worst places to live in the UK 2007 list released!
And the worst place is Middlesbrough!
Quote:
PROUD Middlesbrough residents will be screaming at their TV sets when Channel 4 names the town as the worst place to live in Britain.
It’s the third year in a row the town has made the “worst” top ten list, revealed today by Channel 4 property show Location, Location, Location.
But proud Boro residents have already begun singing their town’s praises - and are sticking up for it on the programme’s own website.

I don't agree with this one tiny bit, in my opinion and a load of others opinions, Middlesbrough has improved a lot over the last year. And for some reason we went from the 6th worst to the worst? I for some reason think the show is a fix.
The list:

Must be if it's worse than Newham, although it's interesting to see a quarter of the places in the top 20 are in London, makes sense considering the amount of tax London contributes

Re: Worst places to live in the UK 2007 list released!
Call me an old cynic, and many have, but does anyone else think there is a linkage between these crappy, ill informed tv shows and the current housing market?
I read the other day that Whitehaven ,Cumbria is to be the test bed town for the digital switchover and that they have already cut off certain analogue channels. Apparently the town is ill prepared. Papers do like to accentuate the negative and eliminate the positive don't they?
Anyway, if Whitehaven is as ill prepared as the papers say, then this is a golden opportunity to put your television in the bin and fill your time with something less negative, more productive and more fullfilling. Perhaps a bracing coastal walk or a walk in the country?

Re: Worst places to live in the UK 2007 list released!
They're not so far off the mark in Blackpool. Fortunately I live near the border with St'Annes - well away from the town centre. As the the council care only about "packing the visitors in" there's lots of neglected areas and lots of "showcases" too. Mind you (to be fair) the council has just changed from Labour to Conservative - so We'll have to see if things change in the future.
Apart from that, there are the "usual" council estates. You know the places - those frequented (in the main) by people with the IQ of a bag of nuts. Unfortunately I live on the borderline of one of these and often experience (first hand) these people who seem to live outside the bounds of reality where common courtesy and good will to others exists.
Given the chance I'd love to flatten the place with napalm.
Si thee

Re: Worst places to live in the UK 2007 list released!
Dont believe there are 4 places worse that Merthyr Tydfil !
Blaenau Gwent seems very odd as it is not a town, village or city but an area. (Borough) As in most areas there are some rough towns in Blaenau Gwent but there are also some nice places to live there.
It's pretty much the same for Merthyr, there are some horribe areas there (Dowlais and that housing estate that escapes me now) but 'Merthyr' as in town has some nice surrounding places to live that are also classed as Merthyr.

Re: Worst places to live in the UK 2007 list released!
Knowsley, Middlesbrough (sorta) and Manchester have largish Virgin Media offices. We don't like overpaying our guys, do we
Islington is an immensely diverse place, going from well posh to well 'ard in a few streets. Interesting area for a stroll (or a victory parade, for that matter).
Haringey's OK though - they even have cafe culture there, consisting of well-dressed Turkish men who look like part of the furniture. Full of life and decent kebab shops.
Escapee has a point though, the areas are too big to be meaningful, the entry for our borough (Hounslow) says it's rubbish because of the smell of sewage, which is several miles away from here, where it's lovely. British towns can change character completely in a few hundred yards, after all.

I have to agree about Hull in second place.
I found it really dirty and industrial last time I was up there.
I'm guessing Nottingham is there because of gun crime, as it is a nice place for shopping.

Yes, couldn't think of the name when I posted. Merthyr is like many places in South Wales a mixture of good and bad.
Penrhys in the Rhondda, Graig y racha, Landsbury park Caerphilly, and we have Trevethin in Pontyool, Its the same in most areas.

Have you ever approached Merthyr from the A465? The view of the whole town as you pass the Baverstock takes your breath away.

Like Middlesbrough, then. Although in the latter case, it replaces your breath with a nasty hacking cough.
