Burma march largest in 20 years

Unlike a day earlier, police barred a group of monks from entering the road that leads to the home of detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
The rallies began last month when the government doubled fuel prices.
BBC South Asia correspondent Jonathan Head says every day the protests are growing in size - the campaign the monks began just six days ago is now openly challenging the military, urging all citizens to join in.

Re: Burma march largest in 20 years
Yes, I'm keeping an eye on this. I visited Burma about 15 years ago. A stunning country with one of the most repressive regimes in the world. The gateway to Asia in the 50s, now one the poorest countries in Asia. I really hope things will change, but with the SLORC (or whatever they call themselves these days) in charge it seems very unlikely this will happen without major bloodshed

photos of Burma, or Myanmar, as it's called these days. Check out Shwedagon (Rangoon/Yangon) and Pagan/Bagan, Burma's equivalent of Ayuthaya/Sukothai or Angkor* even. I'd love to go back, but I'm not going to put $s in the coffers until the regime changes.
*There's nothing like Angkor. Pagan comfortably takes second place though.

The military junta ruling Burma has now threatened to "take action" against the monks...

Right, so a bunch of peaceful Buddhist monks protesting against a rather nasty oppressive regime are in fact " 'Destructive elements' opposed to peace"
The story goes on to say that 3000 people were killed when the military crushed the last democracy uprising.

When I was there they had Billboards with slogans in Burmese as well as English. One of them read: "Crush all destructive elements". The rethoric hasn't changed apparently.
Edit: This sort of stuff:

Re: Burma march largest in 20 years
scary. I don't want to watch the news at the minute for fear of what they are going to do to the protesters (wonderful though it is to see so many people on the streets like that) this time. I know I'll just bawl my eyes out

Re: Burma march largest in 20 years
Dusk to Dawn curfew in Rangoon and Mandalay, a ban on gatherings of more than five people, and riot police in place. It looks like tomorrow will be crunch time
Wouldn't it be nice to see the police side with the demonstrators or refusing to obey orders?

Re: Burma march largest in 20 years
One person reported dead now (BBC - breaking news). I'm afraid this will get a lot worse before it gets better.
