Bye bye John Reid
John Reid's announced that he's going to resign as Home Secretary before Gordon Brown throws him out (there can only be one Scottish heavyweight). Good riddance to bad rubbish. That leaves Brown with the interesting choice of picking a new Chancellor, a new Justice Minister and a new Home Secretary (police/security service bit) when he gets in (assuming Blair's friend Charlie Falconer also gets the elbow).
It's not like there's a huge choice of competent Labour ministers in the first place. I suspect Jack Straw may get one of them almost by default (he's English, too, and is about the only long-serving Cabinet Minister not to be irredeemably tarnished by Blairism).

Re: Bye bye John Reid
I'm beginning to wonder how governmental departments function at all with revolving door leaders.

Re: Bye bye John Reid
Well the head in the sand Home Office grandees win out again. A not fit for purpose department sees off yet another not fit for purpose minister of a not fit for purpose government. How long have they been in power again?? 10 years isn't it and they still can't sort it out.
Oh yeah and as for Jack Straw - wasn't he the Home Secretary who promised to sort out the Afghan hijackers who arrived at Stansted in 2000 and send them all back home quick smart?? Yeah right - just more hot air!!

Re: Bye bye John Reid
I read in The Mail on Sunday a few week back that Tory Boss Mr Cameron"s family tree comes from Scotland.

Not usually the most reliable of sources. Cameron is definitely English - I don't think anyone can plausibly argue that he's a sleeper for the Scottish Nats, or something. After all, if surnames meant anything, I'd be French, Jack Straw would be lightweight, unreliable and weak and Alec Salmond would be a large migratory fish with pink flesh. Only one of these is correct.

Straight talking? Perhaps you can answer me this - why has he never come up with a straight explanation for spending a drunken weekend with the Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadzic a few years ago? He does like his war criminals, does Reidy.
Reid isn't a straight talker, he's a clueless political bruiser who's as *****scared of the tabloids as any of his predecessors, with a predictable effect on the quality of his department.

Re: Bye bye John Reid
New Labour ministers have perfected the art of talking tough whilst delivering very little of any real substance.
