Town Hall Elections 2007
Who are you going for?
Let's try to keep this separate from the Scottish Parliament thread, seeing as the issues are quite different.

Re: If the SNP wins tonight ...
Actually, and slightly off-topic ( ), I went to vote on the way home from work - bearing in mind that:
a) Grimsby's effectively had a Tory / Lib Dem coalition leading teh council for the last few years, and
b) the Tory's and Lib Dems said that they were actually going to contest seats against each other this time (good for us to have had a proper choice for the last few years, eh ),
the only candidates that I could vote for were Labour, Green Party or an Independant. As it happens, the Independant's almost guaranteed to get in (not that I voted for him ), but the chance to have a wider choice would have been slightly better...
Mod edit ... not off topic any more (Chris T)

Didnt vote, mostly because I am in a different part of the country at the moment than where I live. But I am not too bothered as its local.

I know that it's early doors, but it's interesting to note that 'Not Voting' is already leading. Obviously, one of the reasons given is that people have just moved into their area, but what do people think about the 'if you don't vote, you waive your right to complain about your local council' issue?
EDIT: Oh, and I voted for Labour, by the way - I'm fairly dyed-in-the-wool when it comes to my political choice anyway, but I truly think that it's about time we got rid of the shower that have been running North East Lincolnshire...

Of course, in an open and free democracy you have freedom of speech whatever you do or don't do ... however I think you could be accused of hypocrisy if you complain about the level of your council tax while at the same time doing nothing about trying to remove from power the party that set it.

That's true and it suits the powers that be, otherwise they'd give us the 'none of the above option', not voting or spoiling your ballot paper is the only way we currently have to show how dissatisfied we are with the current options

Ah well, if it came to that, if there were no candidates that I wanted to vote for, I'd much rather spoil my paper than just not bother going - at least that way some sort of record is made
EDIT: I'd be interested to see who voted for UKIP and the BNP as well

Re: Town Hall Elections 2007
Chris, the fact that a person pays council tax gives them the right to complain about the services they pay for

Yup, but if you don't vote, you can't complain about the people who arrange it so that your road isn't repaired, or your bins don't get emptied
