Teacher sacked over religion row
Quote:
A supply teacher has been sacked from a secondary school following complaints from Muslim pupils.
Andrew McLuskey was sacked from Bayliss Court Secondary School in Slough after a Religious Education lesson discussing the pros and cons of religion.
Pupils at the predominantly Muslim school claimed Mr McLuskey said most suicide bombers were Muslim.
But he rejected the allegation and said the school was too quick to sack him without giving him right of reply.
"Very unjust"
He expected to complete an eight week contract at the school - but was sacked after only several days.
"I feel it's very unjust," he said.
"I think I should've been given the chance to respond to the allegations and not in effect be ejected from a job without the chance to defend myself."
The school authorities denied they were being heavy-handed and said their first priority was pupils' welfare.
"I don't think it's important what I think," said the school's deputy head teacher Ray Hinds.
"It's what the pupils think that were in the classroom at the time. And they were very upset."

Pupils were upset? Do me a favour, this is bloody madness, they will rewrite history shortly to "NOT" offend Muslims.
Surley 99.9999999999% of suicide bombers are Muslim??

Re: Teacher sacked over religion row
Religion, one of the biggest causes of conflict the world has ever seen Sounds like a case of over reaction coupled with ill-feeling generated by recent news headlines rather than a complaint based on any hard facts.
Also stinks of a school looking to cover their backs as quickly and as fully as possible without a care for the damage they are actually doing to the school with their knee-jerk reaction.

Re: Teacher sacked over religion row
There is a danger in giving this much power to the students...especially if there was no chance of discussion about it.
I'm also pretty certain that statistically it could be proven that he had his facts right but the school just didn't want to face any litigation about it.
So I think he should have stayed after some pretty open discussion by everyone otherwise we will have no one having a right to an opinion that the majority of the students disagree with.I'm all for sensitivity but not for downright ignoring of facts.Storm in a teacup. If he had struck a pupil yes but because he has a difference of opinion he should lose work?..I think not.
I wonder if he has a union.
Note to myself..see a union rep and get paid up this week..

Re: Teacher sacked over religion row
He shouldn't have been sacked, but its probably just as well for his own protection anyway.

Re: Teacher sacked over religion row
They sacked him for stating a fact?!
What next? Teachers won't be allowed to say that the Germans gassed the Jews?

Re: Teacher sacked over religion row
Actually around 80% of suicide bombers are tamil tigers fighting Sri Lanka, who are not Muslims.
They were before 9/11 and they still are. Womble get your facts right. If your are anti Muslim then say so, posting inaccurate information just makes you look ignorant.

While I don't agree with your assertion that most suicide bombers are Muslim (while most we hear about in the west probably are, we probably hear about a fraction of the suicide bombings that go on), I do think that that the school head should at least have talked to the teacher to find out what happened. Some pupils, regardless of religion, would make stuff up just to get rid of the teacher.

Re: Teacher sacked over religion row
Well, its a shame he got his facts wrong. If your teaching you might want to get your facts right.
We do not seem to have information about why the students complained. It seems to only be the guy who was sacked who we have information from. We dont know about the tone of the lession either. He could have been talking mostly about muslims in a negivitive tone, or with a lack of respect.

what inaccurate information? Womble didn't say most muslims are suicide bombers but he write it as a question:-
"Surley 99.9999999999% of suicide bombers are Muslim??"
ps. "your" should be spelt "you're"

Exactly right. Maybe the teacher had been warned. Maybe the children are making it up. Maybe maybe maybe....
In the absence of information, I personally would side with the management decision. If subsequent information (e.g. during a tribunal) questions that decision, then is the time for debate. Too much conjecture at this stage is not helpful, and can lead to bad feelings in the future.

Why do you keep posting these though? It seems like a agenda/issue you have with minority groups. I mean the last two you posted are quite isolated, its not as if its government policy. I am sure I can find new storys were muslims have been treated like ****. Would that please you?
You just taking one case here, another there, and painting a picture of massive opression and 'pandering' to favor muslims but these is not the case.

Re: Teacher sacked over religion row
Far from it, I just post news as I see and read it. I also read http://english.aljazeera.net/News for a view from the other side.
You speak of Govt policy?? When did the govt consult the Irish community before they carried out a raid on the IRA?? But they consult the Muslim one??? Institutional racism or what?

As far as I know, Muslim extreamists tend to be a lot more secret and quiet in their communitys. They keep their activitys secret from anyone outside the cell, even family, so no one knows who they are.
Hence no chance of the impending raid being leaked. IRA had more of a community
