I voted the moon, that still isn't far enough, not that I don't like a gamble, the thing is, I like a gamble

Re: The 'super-casino' contenders
there are 3 I can think of in Luton already, and they're building another 2 - one of which is going to be on a super-scale as they knocked down most of the old vauxhall site for it.

Re: The 'super-casino' contenders
moon for me. How can the government, given massive debts, over-taxation, an NHS in crisis, PFI deals going through the roof and spiralling personal and public debt think that the country urgently needs a massive room full of slot machines run by some already loaded Yank beats me. There'll be peerages at the bottom of this. Perhaps that's a new idea for a slot machine.
Anyone would think that a senior government figure with a large mortgage, leaving his job in the next few months needs rich friends in the USA.

It's Manchester, apparently. Didn't expect that, are there elections up there soon or something?

In gambling, the house always wins.
Which means someone else is losing..........................

Re: The 'super-casino' contenders
And even more bad news is other cities have won the rights to have smaller casinos with jackpots of up to £4000. Disturbingly (for me anyway) Swansea is one such city.

Re: The 'super-casino' contenders
Only time will tell...It may be good it may be bad but whatever we are going to have to live with it.
I'm not a gambler myself but I appreciate the fact that we should be able to choose as adults whether, when and where we gamble.Let's at least get some money in the government coffers from it and at least I have a choice about NOT paying any tax from it because as I said I don't gamble.

The casino operator's head office, perhaps?
Manchester is the archetypal New Labour city - they had their conference there last year. It's the New Blackpool.
The press release is interesting, it says that
Quote:

Manchester has a catchment area for a casino second only to that of London

Why not put it in London then? None of the 17 announced are in London, as it happens. Could this be because it would be just a bit obvious after Prescott's cowboy antics?
None of the silly 'Respect' zones announced the other week are in London, either, as an off-topic aside.

Re: The 'super-casino' contenders
In America, Casinos are known to boost local business and jobs.
Obviously people will lose but thats their choice, no one is forcing them to gamble. For those who do want to then why should we prevent that from happening? Some people enjoy it and as long as their are treatmets to help people where they become addicted then its ok.

Substitute "illegal drugs" for "gambling" (except there's no tax on illegal drugs)

Re: The 'super-casino' contenders
I am pleased Manchester has got it as it shows there is life outside London , the site is about 15 mins drive from where I live so not too far I can't really see how different a night in the casino is to a night out on the booze, where I can easily spend as much with nothing to show for it either apart from a cracking hangover. I wonder how many people who are slating casinos have actually been in one?? We have a pleasant evening when we go without having to worry about getting a thump from some drunken yob on an ASBO !! It's all very civilised and good fun and we only take as much as we can afford to lose, if we win then it's a nice Brucie Bonus
