Tory MP decent enough to admit he got it wrong
Some of you may remember a Sun story a few months back alleging that a house that some soldiers were due to move into near Windsor had been vandalised by 'Muslims'. It was rubbish of course, and even the Sun have had to apologise, but what of the Tory MP Phillip Davies that the Sun got a rentaquote from along the following lines:
Quote:
|
“If there’s anybody who should f*** off it’s the Muslims who are doing this kind of thing. Police should pull out the stops to track down these vile thugs.”

Well, he's been contacted (craftily CC'd to CAMERON, David, I note) and has replied in an email, reproduced here

Nice to see a politician admitting they've got it wrong, and hopefully this will be a warning to others not to react to Sun journalists ringing them up for a quote (the Sun keeps a list of people who can be relied upon for making headline grabbing quotes without thinking).

Made up stories about Muslims - that could never happen!
I am so shocked, I think I will pop along to my local WH Smiths and buy some ciggies (hopefully).

Why is there a long delay (more than three months) between the Sun article and the apology?
But yes, it is good to see a politician admitting a mistake.

To be honest, I can't see where "decent" comes into it. He had no choice really, did he?
Looks more like a grovelling response to me "I hope you will not hold me responsible for an inaccurate story put to me by The Sun".
Err...right. It's not as if The Sun has been inaccurate in the past, is it!
btw...who is Philip Davies? Does he have some connection with Windsor, or the armed forces?

No connection whatsoever, just being a rent-a-quote. He is the MP for Shipley (near Bradford/Leeds).

I don't know how BB knows it, but I know it is true from my involvement in politics, and through that got to know broadcasters and journalists (like Andrew Rawnsley and Nick Robinson); they usually have a list of contacts, split by topic and or general availibility. They told me that most newpapers/broadcasters have lists like this.

Re: Tory MP decent enough to admit he got it wrong
Of course they are known to get it wrong, like when civil partnerships were being discussed and the Today program had a gay rights activist and a Tory MP on, neither were playing ball (oo-er) in that the gay rights activist was making a point that this was not marriage, but just bestowing the same legal rights on gay life couples, and the Tory MP was backing him up 100%, was funny to hear the interviewer struggle to get an argument going between them
