Isreali Sperm Row
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6279061.stm
What I found most interesting here is that the family of the guy concerned said that he always wanted to be a father, hence why they wanted his sperm to be used.
But does this make sense. Surely the point of being a father is to be there for the event (i.e bringing up the child).

Of course the father should be there. Obviously there is some kind of tradition over there which condones robbing dead bodies.

And that gives them the right to do this? Disgraceful.

Perhaps it does if this is true, if it were my son and that's what he wanted I'd do the same
Although Mr Cohen, 20, was single and had left no written expression of his desire to become a father, his family claimed that had long been his wish.

Over there? Middle East, Israel, or Tel Aviv specifically?
Could you please clarify this "tradition" of which you speak.
Obviously, this could never happen in the UK
OrCouldIt?

But that woman was married to the guy in question. In this case the dead son had never even met the woman who is going to be the mother.
I can understand that he wanted to be a dad while he was alive, but what benefit is there from this when you're dead? He wont take any pleasure from it will he?
Could it be a case of his parents wanting something to remeber their son by?

My thoughts exactly, as the article mentions the need to maintain the bloodline. I'd be interested to know the parents have any other children.
The boy might even have been a virgin.

That's why I tried to think what I'd do in their place, as no one apart from them could say for certain what his wishes were, or have committed to the idea he really was

I think that the only time that frozen sperm should be released for use is
when the male donor of the sperm is there, alive at the point of use and can give his consent

Wouldn't need to use frozen, then - he could deliver it draught
pre-empts comments about "hand-pulled"

Re: Isreali Sperm Row
I'd be happy for this to be done to me if I died childless.

even tho you wouldnt be around to raise the child, or derive no joy whatsoever from it.
I could understand a person saying that he'd like to have kids and if he died he'd like his sperm to be used to create kids (and preserve his bloodline) if thats what he wanted (he's made it clear that he'd like his sperm to be used when hes dead)
But if someone told me they really wanted kids, and then died before that could happen, then who are we to decide if he would still have wanted kids if he was dead. I dont think that was part of the conversation / agreement in this case.

You mean like what happens every day with sperm donors?
Where do you think infertile men get sperm for their wives from when they go for IVF? The toothfairy?
My gf and I have discussed me being a sperm donor so that other couples can have the opportunity to become parents.
In the reported case, they will have the support of an extra pair of grandparents, and the child will know about it's father, how is that worse?

I agree, but being a father also has alot to do with carrying on his legacy/family lineage.
