France offered to 'merge' with UK in 1950s
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/global/ma...nfrance115.xml
"Britain and France discussed a "union" in the 1950s and even talked about France joining the British Commonwealth, it emerged today.
Previously secret documents uncovered in the National Archives reveal how, on Sept 10, 1956, the French prime minister Guy Mollet came to London to discuss the possibility of a merger between the two countries with Sir Anthony Eden, then British prime minister."

Didn't France offer to merge with Germany in the 40's?

Don't think it was a merger, more of a hostile takeover really.

Yeah, bit like black people... don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're nice people but they haven't discovered soap yet either.
Oops, nearly forgot It's only OK to slag off other nationalities.

Odd that the no-soap meme is the one the Yanks use about us. Along with bad teeth.
Heard a French bloke interviewed about this who said 'we would not want zer Queen, we would like Benny 'ill'. I think that illustrates fairly fundamental differences.

Re: France offered to 'merge' with UK in 1950s
OK before anyone gets carried away this is a thread to discuss the (remote) possibility of a merger between the UK and France
If anyone has a problem with any comments made then report them in the usual manner.
DO NOT drag the thread into flaming and sniping.

And Pakistanis, if you're calling them stone age
TraxData, where are these lovely people in France* you refer to?
Or do you mean the ex-pats who've moved from Britain to the south coast?
*I'm not considering Corsica to be part of France, as the people are way too nice compared with the Northern French I've known.

Work out what the difference is between race and nationality, reverse your humour bypass and then get back to me.

Re: France offered to 'merge' with UK in 1950s
Interesting that they wanted the Queen to be head of state, her maj might have had a bit of competition if they had looked after their own a bit better, second thoughts that might have been one of the reasons we turned them down, the Royal families heads on poles might have had an impact on tourism, certainly after the novelty had worn off and the heads had gone mouldy at any rate

Re: France offered to 'merge' with UK in 1950s
I already understand the difference between race and nationality, thanks... don't think I'm gonna need your help on that one.
You seem to have missed the point I was making though. Why is it OK to slag off a nationality... whether it be the frogs, the yanks, the chinks, the krauts, etc... yet it's deemed socially inacceptable to be racist?
If it's not frowned upon to discriminate against someone's nationality, why isn't it similarly acceptable to discriminate against a particular race?

Re: France offered to 'merge' with UK in 1950s
Never been to France though it is a place I would like to go to, but I have been told a lot of times that the people are rude. I still want to go and make my own mind up though

Well, we have been at war with France for the best part of the past 800 years.
As for the yanks, have you met them?
Krauts, well, two world wars and one world cup and people start thinking they're better than them, and of course their's the irony of their lack of a sense of humour, when they're actually very funny
Perhaps it's because someone can do something about their nationality, but not about their race?
