Phone Scam
Just heard about the following phone scam. Although it relates to the south of england it could happen elsewhere.
Quote:
|
A scam being perpetrated in the South of England relating to Premium rate telephone calls. A card is posted through your door advising that a parcel delivery has been attempted, and advising that a number be called to arrange collection/delivery. The telephone number begins with '0906', which is a premium rate suffix. Calls are connected to an answering machine and incur charges at an extremely high rate.

The most you can be charged is £1.50 a minute, which is what this scam charges you, so you'd have to be on the phone for 10 minutes to be charged £15
Info about it (particularly mention the £15) from the icstis website (PDF) http://www.icstis.org.uk/pdfs_news/email.pdf

[Merged] 0906 phone number and a postal delivery scam

Quote:
Subject: Royal Mail postal scam
The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following scam:
A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel
Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a
parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium
rate number). DO NOT call this number, as this is a mail scam
originating from Belize . If you call the number and you start to hear
a recorded message you will already have been billed £1.50 for the
phone call. If you do receive a card with these details, then please
contact Royal Mail Fraud on 02072396655 or ICSTIS (the premium rate
service regulator) at www.icstis.org.uk
or your local trading standards office.
This is a genuine scam and is under investigation by ICSTIS. Please
also advise non-PC aware users of this scam.
|
Lets hope this news gets around and spoils their rich pickings.
