How many 4x4's actually run on SVO?

A larger proportion than that of small cars given that most 4x4's are diesel while most small cars are petrol

I so wish we owned one now, as that bit of stats just gives you sooo much credibility with your eco-aware friends

I'm teetering on the brink ... I almost bought 6 litres of veg oil to tip into my Berlingo's fuel tank the other week but I just can't bring myself to believe I've not overlooked anything. I keep imagining clouds of chip shop-smelling smoke and hefty garage bills.

On a side note. I firmly believe that 4x4 vehicles should be charged road tax at commercial rate.

I always wondered, when driving round the country lanes of Hampshire, why 4X4's never moved over when encountering oncoming traffic, they would invariably force the ordinary car driver to move into the side where all the ruts and potholes are when their vehicle is better equipped for that terrain. I was told that they didn't want to get flints in their tyres because they cost so much! Bully boy tactics.

Check the engine code, XUDTE with a bosch square block pump.
Definitely not direct injection.
It's getting a bit cold to run at 100% though.
However, running just 10% meets your personal Kyoto requirements on CO2 emission reductions.

Would your diesel car need any modifications to run on vegetable oil? And how would i Know if mine can? (without filling it up with 10 litere of crisp and dry first that is?)

Depends on the type of injection, direct injection is a no-no.
Also depends on the type of fuel pump, as to wether it can handle the thicker veg (rotory pumps apparently are not good, nor are lucas).
Some pumps can handle 100% SVO, while others can only handle mixes of diesel and SVO, others need the SVO to be heated.
If you care less about the environment, you can damage it slightly more by processing SVO or WVO (waste veg oil, like from a chip shop) into bio diesel.
This, despite being not as good for your engine or fuel tank, or the environment as you have to use electricity and other chemicals like concentrated sulphuric acid, only incurs a duty of 27.1p per liter.
SVO on the other hand, which requires no treatment and is better for your engine (even better than diesel, assuming your engine can handle it) strangley incurs a duty of 47.1p per liter (which makes it very nearly as expensive as diesel in my area, go goverment with encouraging enviromental transport!)

Re: UP yours anti 4x4
I don't have a 4X4.
However, buying a car isn't just about needs and whether you can "justify" it to the environmental fascists. Sometimes it's about enjoyment too.
I choose my car based on practicality, enjoyment and cost. I couldn't give two hoots about the environment.
You see, if the environment is so important and everybody has to stop using cars, that's fine. I'll do that. Just as soon as government ministers, council leaders, judges, senior police officers and other "important" people do the same.
Until then, if it's not good enough for them, it's not good enough for me either.
95% of the crap spouted about the environment is an excuse to raise taxes.
I am at the point now where I am so sick of environmentalists preaching to me about what I can and cannot do with my own money, that I feel tempted to go out an buy something like a 4X4 or something REALLY environmentally unsound, simply to spite them and show them that I shall do as I please regardless of their sanctimonious holier than thou lecturing.

Were they car engines? Or more industrial?
Many people are unaware that the diesel engine was first designed to run on peanut oil (oh how I wish I had a free supply of that!)

Re: UP yours anti 4x4
I am often seen driving my nasty polluting 2 strokes around, in fact it looks like I am going to pick up a Trabant next weekend.
Just how much pollution do I produce in a years low milage motoring compared to larger vehicles running all around the country.
