Cuddly toy rescue on M-way
Quote:
Police closed a section of the M11 to rescue a girl's soft toy after it flew from the family car in a gust of wind.
Amy Osborn, 10, was returning home to Ramsgate, Kent, from holiday in Essex when her cuddly tiger, Tyrone, escaped through the sunroof.......

Link.........a nice story for a change

Yeah, I posted that in the happy thought thread (I didn't think it warranted a thread on it's own). A nice story indeed.

Her father Simon, who called out Essex Police, said: "One of the officers had children and probably knew the importance of these things."

Am I being mean in thinking that the police would have been better used fighting crime?

No, not at all.... I'd have been incredibly annoyed if my journey had been held up because of this. It'll teach the little sod at least not to hang her toys out of the sunroof in future...

No, in fact, I was in two minds about it as well. But I presume things were a bit slow, and it is a nice thing to do. Obviously, they shouldn't make a habit of it...

Re: Cuddly toy rescue on M-way
says in the story that it landed in the central reservation and they set up a rolling roadblock.... i can't imagine this being more than one traffic car parked in the outside lane with a "move over" flasher on the back, for about 10 seconds...

Re: Cuddly toy rescue on M-way
Probably would have involved at least two police cars. One for the rolling road block, one for the retrieval.
I must say I'm surprised, purely on the basis of health and safety to the officers, and risks of something going wrong simply while setting up the rolling block (yes that is a standard proceedure, but there are always drivers not paying attention and not expecting to come up on a load of slow traffic in front).

Re: Cuddly toy rescue on M-way
the only other conceivable reason is that the toy is one of those huge ones that you win at circuses etc, and it would cause a distraction to other road users...

Well, as a daily motorway driver, I'd bet my hat that it caused more than a 10 second delay..... a slow vehicle on an inside lane can cause tail backs, let a lone part of the outside lane blocked off entirely, no matter how long for.

It all depends what time of day they did it. And don't forget, the M-way traffic cops who did this will have been out on that stretch of road anyway, as part of their regular patrols. I suspect that there was little cost in time or convenience to anyone in this. And a very sad little girl has her cuddly tiger back.
I know all too well what a life-ending tragedy it would be if a certain little boy I know lost his doggy and hippo.

I know she's 10 and that she still has a cuddly toy, but that's no need to call her sad. You're just being mean, Chris!
