Cypriot plane crash
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4150312.stm
Quote:
A Cypriot airliner carrying at least 110 people has crashed north-east of Athens, reports say.
The plane - from Helios airlines - hit a mountain as it approached Athens after getting into difficulties.
An air traffic controller at Athens airport told the AFP news agency the plane, travelling from Larnaca, Cyprus, crashed into the Euboea peninsula.
Greek military jets were scrambled after controllers lost contact with the pilot, AFP reported.

Re: Cypriot plane crash
Great, that's all we bloody need, especially after the Air France flight at Pearson airport, Toronto.
I hope everyone is alright, but sounds bad though. When planes hit mountains, its much worse than hitting flat ground.

It's happened before - the JAL 747 in 1985 had 4 survivors after hitting a mountain, but that's unusual.
It's tragic when events like this happen, but flying is still tremendously safe, and getting safer despite far more people flying every year. That's remarkable, and we shouldn't forget it.

Re: Cypriot plane crash
I guess the problem is that, although it it safer, people see themselves able to survive car crashes but your chances of surviving a plane crash are much lower.

Re: Cypriot plane crash
Yes. But your chances of being in a fatal car crash are far higher than your chances of being in a fatal plane crash. Humans didn't evolve a good grasp of probability and risk, unfortunately, which is why lotteries work.

Re: Cypriot plane crash
From what I've read, this plane has had a history of problems.
It was grounded for a while due to air con/oxygen system issues... previous passengers had had to be treated after flying on the plane, therefore it was put in for repairs.
So i'm reckoning botched repair work? It's been reported that a passenger contacted his cousin saying the pilot was all blue and dead, and everyone else was freezing. Looks like the system did indeed fail.... I just hope people were un-concious before the crash.......
Sky News reporting that majority of the passengers were greek children.

Re: Cypriot plane crash
One would think that if there were oxygen/temperature/pressurisation system problems then the pilot could get the plane down fast to around 6,000 ft or thereabouts where this wouldn't be so much of a problem and then carry on to their nearest alternate airfield. However, if the terrain/cloudbase didn't allow that and they were flying under instrument conditions then they may not have had the chance.

Update...
...Meanwhile Monday, police in northern Greece said they had arrested a man who said he had received a telephone text message from a passenger on board the doomed plane, according to AP.
Police said the man was Nektarios-Sotirios Voutas, 32, who had told Greek TV stations Sunday his cousin texted him minutes before the crash saying: "Farewell, cousin, here we're frozen."
Authorities said they believed the man was lying, and his cousin's name was not on the Cypriot government's official list of victims.

Has it been confirmed that this is the same plane?
