The shot that shook the world
Vote for the most significant shot from 50 years of News on ITV at http://www.itn-theshot.com/
What would your choices be?
Would give you mine but it will have to wait as the site is being hammered.

Re: The shot that shook the world
How about the shooting of Kennedy?
Or what really happened between Ruby and Oswald

Re: The shot that shook the world
I had a look and voted for:
Berlin Wall - I remember this. It's hard to comprehend that the wall ever existed - a violent division of a European country in the 20th C.
Vietnam - the original pointless conflict against which all other pointless conflicts are compared. "Another Vietnam".
Aberfan - I wasn't around in the sixties, but my parent's were, and when Aberfan is mentioned, you can tell that it affected them. Mining communities are familiar with tragedy - it's a part of their history and every community has memories of at least one accident that took lives. Men who have never come home, in some cases still down mines. But children

Re: The shot that shook the world
I think its the moon landing, who doesnt know about it? How many peoples perspective of the universe we live in was changed forever? I think it really changed the way we view ourselves (hasnt stopped us killing eachother mindyou but I said it was signifigant, not a mirracle ).
Though that was a positive thing and we all know that its only really bad things that linger with the public mind so I would say 911, Its not the first time so many have died at once but I think it was the first time anything like it was televised live, everyone worldwide had upto the minute updates on the situation, I think I only met one person who didnt know about it during the first couple of hours and I havent met anyone since who didnt know about it.

Re: The shot that shook the world
I voted for 9/11. I think the course of history was changed then. It also set up the current state of the world and the west v middle east conflict.

Whilst Hiroshima was so terrible no one actually saw it live, unfoding before their eyes. Even the residents of Hiroshima only saw the little bit around them and didn't know what was happening.
With 9/11 there were millions of people around the world who tuned into TV news channels when they heard that a plane had hit one of the towers and watched, helpless as the second plane hit and the towers collapsed. I was one of those who heard about it seconds after the first plane struck as one of the members of an American chatroom I was in heard the report on the TV channel he was watching whilst in the chatroom and brought it to our attention.
Most memorable events you only see after they have happened and you have a pretty good idea of what is going to happen when you watch. 9/11 was so very different.

My votes went to:
Global Conflict - Twin Towers.
People, Power and Politics - The Berlin Wall.
Human Tragedy - Tsunami.
World Firsts - First Step.
Sporting Greats - Liverpool.
To bw honest, I have voted more based on the event than the actual video.

Re: The shot that shook the world
Pah! 1969 the moon of course. There is no other event that had more significence for our world and the way we have viewed it since. The technology and imaginative use of that technology since have all stemmed from that time.
And yes maybe the fire has gone out of the space race but the technology is still being pursued with a lot of vigour.
Incog.
