Idiots hinder Air ambulance

BBC
Quote:
A helicopter ambulance may be forced to demand a police guard when it lands - to stop youths clambering on board.
The move was prompted after teenagers tried to scramble over the aircraft and refused to move after it landed in Bilton, near Rugby.
Paramedics were inside the helicopter treating a woman with serious injuries.
Operations manager Danny Hopkins, of Warwickshire & Northamptonshire Air Ambulance service, said the youths' antics were extremely dangerous.
I'm disgusted by this sort of stupid behaviour No doubt if one of the little prats had been caught by the rotors they would have demanded immediate medical attention, an airlift to hospital and compensation from the local NHS trust for their injuries

However there was a dearth of facts in that article. It read like they didn't have the full story.

Re: Idiots hinder Air ambulance

I live in Rugby & unfortunately this is the second incident over the last 2 weekends involving the air ambulance..............last weekend they were fired at by youths with a BB gun!!! They were at the time trying to land to get to an injured woman who had fallen from a window.............makes me furious, as these guys do an absolutely marvelous job, hopefully the police will catch the culprits very soon!!!

There might not have been a lot of point.

As the engine on a helicoptor is put to idle the rotational speed of the blades drops.

The only thing that keeps the blades straight is that rotational speed (they flex quite a lot when you actually get hold of them - obviously while they're stationary ).

As the rotational speed declines the blades start to droop. Anybody not aware of this who is stood (or playing) in the wrong place will find out just how much they droop, in a very unpleasant way.

The main rotor is not the biggest problem on the ground for bystanders. The tail rotor is. It could nicely decapitate and mince a chav.

It would probably have removed their heads, not that it sounds like there was a a lot in there to worry about. I think this is one trend where new laws would be required - "hindering emergency service personnel" for example. It's presumably a specific offence* to obstruct a policeman when he's working, so why not a fireman or ambulanceman?

Interesting article making that point. Very enlightening.
http://www.lond.ambulance.freeuk.com/newsreport.html

*I've checked it and it is - section 89(2) of the Police Act 1996 - "Any person who resists or wilfully obstructs a police constable in the execution of his duty or a person assisting him shall be guilty of an offence". Only carries a maximum sentence of 1 month in jail, though.

Good point, the tail rotor has a very minor arc of incidence though. They would have to move into that arc in order to be injured. Most people know enough to avoid the tail of a helicoptor, the "blade drop" thing is less well know though.

Re: Idiots hinder Air ambulance

Dunno about the rest of the country, but the police and air ambulances here have been switching over to Notar® helicopters... I'm sure there's other advantages, but these things are noticeably quieter than normal choppers. Just a shame that there's no tail rotor to chop off idiots' heads when they do foolish things

Re: Idiots hinder Air ambulance

Hmmm. Maybe the long established and effective principle of punishing the many because of the actions of a few needs to be implemented. If your kids interfere with the emergency services, no emergency services for a specified period, except for those with pre-existing conditions and the elderly. Would soon lead to an improvement.
