Dude... All I can say is you worry me BBKing... You obviously have a lot more faith in mankind than I do. Kudos to you for offering a solution nonetheless

I think faith in mankind is all we've got left isn't it?

Not really. Being cynical has served us fairly well in the past. Iran may well end up with nukes because of Europe's stance on it (it's OK for them, Iran doesn't shout "Death To Europe" during prayers), but I wouldn't like to see it without some kind of fight.
You wouldn't trust a complete stranger in your home alone, so for the Americans to put faith in a country that does shout "Death To America", every day, virtually every mosque, that wants to acquire the most awesome powerful technology has ever seen, it's asking quite a lot.

Re: Brink of a nuclear detonation?
But you expect the Iranians to put the faith in the Americans (who just happen to have broken into next door)?

Re: Brink of a nuclear detonation?
I don't expect them to trust the US, but I wouldn't think that is the issue here. It is the UN's (IAEA) law they are violating. The US just seem to be the ones bothered about it.
Although the UN has been proven to be totally impotent (Saddam, Rawanda, Darfur) so its's to be expected.

Re: Brink of a nuclear detonation?
What we see on the news and in our newspapers is only a tipple of what is likely going on behind the scenes.
I am getting more and more cynical right now with the reading I am doing to how much of this is being overhyped to create sales for papers and ratings for the telly.
While Nuclear bombs are a threat yes I agree a very grave dangerous threat to everyone on the planet, I still think we should stop treating Iran like morons and why not ask THEM what they want and how they feel? damn I think sometimes we think that much of what we want we forget sometimes that all Iran may want is some equality?

My motto is "plan for the worst, hope for the best"
That's the best way to handle most things. Giving out blind faith to fanatical regimes that preach hatred looks bound to backfire.

Who says? Like most things in law, it open to interpretation. Right now Iran is claiming that their nuclear programme is for "peaceful" purposes - which is permitted under the IAEA agreement. Also permitted is nuclear development where the country has been threatened.
Now until Friday I would be uneasy about specifically saying that the US had issued a threat to Iran - it was more of a suggestion.
However Bush changed the game on Friday by specifying that military force was an option on the table - which as I understand it gives Iran more freedom to develop the weapons that Bush says he doesn't want them to have.
Also in support of this argument is Isreal illegally acquiring various chunks of Persia over the last few decades by military might. Whilst there is no suggestion that Isreal might invade Iran, as we have seen, Islamic states stick together as they believe via their religion that the whole of that region is one land and that another Muslim is their brother or sister - so in effect there is a threat from Isreal (another nuclear power).
Don't get me wrong here, I don't want Iran to have nuclear weapons. Nor do I want North Korea to have nuclear weapons. Similarly I don't want Isreal, Pakistan, India, the UK, Russia, China nor the US to have them. Any leader from that list has the capability to launch a nuclear attack (with the possible exception of the two that are on the "axis of evil") and that scares me.
And of course, assuming that Iran does actually launch an attack (presumably either in defence of an advancing US coalition or at Isreal) the Americans (and probably most of the other nuclear powers) will rain down half their arsenal on to them. The Iranians know this, they're not stupid people, so any such predatory action is very unlikely. In my mind they are doing this for a couple of reasons: 1. To deter a potential US invasion. 2. To p**s-off the Yanks. Both of which seem to be working right now.
