Don't flash
Not too sure as to the reliability of this, but heard it on the radio last night.
Somewhere in South London, cars have been travelling around with thier lights off, and as people do when they see this, people have been flashing thier lights to tell them.
according to what I heard this is gang initiation, and they shoot at the first car that flashes them.
As I said not definate as to the reliability, and I hope it isnt true, but just watch out!

Re: Don't flash
That urban myth has been going for years, I first heard about it in 1996 and back in those days it was a gang in LA. Snopes.com might even have something on it if you look

Re: Don't flash
The thing is with snopes discounting everything that has ever been told as an urban legend is what stops a gang doing this for real? inspired by the urban legend?

Re: Don't flash
I thought that headlight flashing was used like the horn - soley to warn other road users of your presence, and not to indicate that a brake light is out, the driver has nice tits, or anything else

Re: Don't flash
It's an urban myth.
But in any case, why worry yourself with the folly of some pillock who hasn't turned their lights on?
If that's how much they are concentrating on their driving then they shouldn't be on the road. Perhaps a minor accident might concentrate the mind a little.
Putting your lights on at night is one of the basic, basic, basic things to do before setting off at night. If you actually forget to do that, then you are not fit to drive at any time of day or night because your silly, simple, easily distracted mind is just not up to the job.
After all, would you be happy if an airline pilot forgot to put the wheels down for landing?

Re: Don't flash
I also heard about this ages ago. It seems to be something that goes round now and then and doest really have a concrete source.
Just for your information, If you are driving in France and someone flashes you, it often means the police are near by.

Re: Don't flash
don't you think if this was true it would have been reported in the newspapers and on a reliable news source like BBC or ITN news.. people need to think abit more before sending e-mails \ telling others about these things

Perhaps you are a "good citizen" and (or is that "do gooder"?!) and are concerned that *others* may be hurt in that "minor accident".
I can think of at least three occasions over the years where I've pointed out to someone that they haven't got their lights on. I don't think that they should have an accident "to concentrate their mind"!

So because something slips your mind once (amazingly it does happen!) you shouldn't be allowed on the road or they should have an accident (remember that others may be involved!) to "teach them a lesson"? And what if you set off before dusk and forgot to turn them on when it got a bit darker?

Airline pilots have co-pilots to ensure that mistakes like this don't happen. Airline pilots are also much more highly trained than car drivers (although I'm well in favour of improving the Driving Test, but that's another thread).

Re: Don't flash
We got a email at work recently, reporting about the 'don't flash' your lights. To be honest I'm sick to death of these things, however much good intent there is by someone who is naive enough to beleive these things and then spreads the rubbish even further. The ICE one recently, even though it is legit, has been ruined by some idiots who think its a way of spreading a mobile phone virus - which don't exist, Mobile phone virus are probably on the way, eventually, but not today.

Re: Don't flash
I heard that myth about gangs in Memphis while I was out there too, the best one I've heard is about the "game of 6" where the bogside hoods from round here beat the living crap out of the 6th person to wear something in particular, clearly a myth as everyone knows they have trouble counting past 1.
