Walk again after snapped spine?
BBC
Quote:
Six weeks after snapping his spine in two in a car crash, a 25-year-old man is able to walk out of hospital.
Matthew Hunt, of Harleston, Suffolk, was not wearing a seatbelt when he lost control of his car near Bungay as he drove to work.
Medical experts said he should have been paralysed but he was able to walk again because crucial nerves survived.
The surgeon who put a surgical scaffold on Mr Hunt's spine at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital said it was a miracle.
Am Rai said: "We couldn't reproduce this pattern of injury in the laboratory and get way with it. Someone up there is certainly looking after him."

A very lucky person indeed

He said before the crash he had never considered using a seatbelt - but now he did.

I wonder why

I lose track of how many people I see driving with a seatbelt around here, it's as though people don't care how much damage they could do to themselves (let alone the people they impact if thrown forwards from the rear seat or through the windscreen)

I think people think that the airbag is a replacement for the seatbelt. They don't realise though, even being restrained by a seatbelt, that an airbag really packs a punch. People think it is soft like a crash mat, but it isn't, even with a belt on, people get winded and bruised (and sometimes even small burns from the deployment)

Re: Walk again after snapped spine?
Whilst I am glad he is recovering.... has he had all his treatment free on the NHS?
If so is this fair? I mean, he chose not to wear a seatbelt, so should he not pay for his treatment?

Stupidity isn't a good enough reason to charge him.

He presumably pays his taxes and stupidity isn't a good enough reason to charge him extra.

Should we make smokers, druggys, drunks, obese people buy for treatment?

Nah, I was just pointing out why he should not pay. We cannot choose not to treat people just because they live unhealthly or do stupid things. I wasnt trying to start anything

Re: Walk again after snapped spine?
This isn't over for him.........he is very likely to suffer from this for the rest of his life. He will get spinal arthritis and possibly irritation of his spinal cord from bony growths on his vertebrae or from the formation of scar tissue in the spinal canal--this will give him practically incurable 'sciatic' pain.
Still, it is a miracle that he survived and is walking........
