7 month old stabbed by nephew

BBC
Quote:
An 11-year-old boy stabbed his baby nephew in the stomach after the infant started crying, a court has heard.
The seven-month-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries at his home in North East Lincolnshire in December.
The accused, who had been playing on a games console, went into a bedroom and stabbed the baby with a kitchen knife, the jury at Hull Crown Court was told.
The boy, now aged 12, denies attempted murder and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Gary Burrell QC, prosecuting, said the boy told police: "(The baby) was in the bedroom next to me and started to cry dead loud."
He paused the computer game he was playing and went into the kitchen where he picked up a knife.
"Without realising that I did, I stabbed (the baby) and didn't realise that I did until it had happened," the boy said.
Quote:
Mr Burrell told the jury that it was accepted by both sides that the boy stabbed the baby, that the baby was seriously injured and that the injuries were life threatening.
"The only issue for you to determine in this case is whether (the defendant) had the necessary intention to be guilty of any of these offences."
Intention?

Re: 7 month old stabbed by nephew

You can bring a 12 year old to court He seems a bit young to be able to enter pleas and have a jury trail

While I hate to join the bandwagon of those who say Computer games can influence violence etc, I do think this may have been the case. Through normal use this wouldnt be the case, however, many parents see these consoles as a onetime expense babysitter, they ignore the reccomended age ratings and it wouldnt have supprised me if this 12 year old was playing something like San Andreas (an 18+ game).

So in a nutshell im not really saying that computer games made this boy stab his brother (little sod did this himself), Im saying that when parents take little or no interest in whether or not thier child is playing unsuitable games these things can happen.

...He paused the computer game he was playing and went into the kitchen where he picked up a knife. "Without realising that I did, I stabbed (the baby) and didn't realise that I did until it had happened," the boy said.

So he didn't realise what he was doing until it happened The fact he paused the game makes him seem pretty aware to me

No doubt we will hear from some counsellor or psychiatrist coming up with a lame reason for this kind of behaviour..'the video game put him in some kind of trance like state..' blah blah blah

When I was eleven I would have known that doing this was wrong.

Re: 7 month old stabbed by nephew

What is also worrying me is that this little psychopath will get away with this and then we have a teenager and then adult walking the streets who is capable of such things......

Re: 7 month old stabbed by nephew

Of course he knew what he was doing was wrong, the baby had probably cried before, and the boy was getting increasingly frustrated, and decided to sort the problem out.

Where were the parents in all of this?

How did they not notice their son go from his room, to the kitchen, carry a knife to his brother bedroom and stab him?

I have to disagree with you on this because I think the only reason the experts roll out this lame excuse is because they cannot understand why this sort of behaviour happens. Most likely, this kid would have stabbed the child if he was sitting playing solitaire and not a video game When I was younger I was watching horror films and violent films such as the Evil Dead and Rambo and I was also playing violent video games but I never felt like going up to a small child and stabbing it

The mother had been sectioned and the grandmother was looking after the child.
Quote:
The baby was being cared for at the time by his grandmother, as her daughter - the accused's sister - was suffering from depression and had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act for her own safety
Not exactly an ideal situation

Exactly, wich is why I didnt actually say computer games cause violence, I said they seem to have in this case. Like with anything the person performing the action has to have the capacity to do so.
As you say the computer game may have had nothing to do with it, at least not in a direct way (e.g. How frustrated can we get after the 20th attempt at one mission where you always get killed seconds before a savepoint), this little psycho clearly could have had the capacity to become voilent if he lost a game of blackjack or monopoly. Though I do think perhapps the theme of the game he was playing may well have been what caused him specificly to go find a knife and stab the baby rather than try to suffocate it, beat it or something more horrific, like what people with such a disturbed nature are often capable of.
Though this is making a lot of assumptions.

[Bad taste] He may well have been playing a game themed around the tweenies or something even more twisted, that sort of thing could drive anybody to murder[/bad taste]
