Comet Impact achieved
BBC
Quote:
US space agency (Nasa) scientists are celebrating after seeing a probe crash into the heart of a comet.
The washing machine-sized 372kg "impactor" collided with Comet Tempel 1 right on cue just after 0550 GMT, to throw up a huge plume of icy debris.
The 37,000km/h impact was expected to create a large crater in the comet.
The probe's mothership, the Deep Impact spacecraft, watched from a safe distance, sending images back to Earth.
Scientists hope that by getting "under the skin" of comet Tempel 1, they can gain new information on the Solar System's original composition and perhaps even how life emerged in our corner of the Universe.

US space agency (Nasa) scientists are apologising after creating a planned probe crash, into the heart of a comet.
The washing machine-sized 372kg "impactor" collided with Comet Tempel 1 right on cue just after 0550 GMT, to throw up a huge plume of icy debris.
The 37,000km/h impact was expected to create a large crater in the comet, but did in fact barely scratch the surface.
The probe's mothership, the Deep Impact spacecraft, watching from a supposedly safe distance, was destroyed earlier this afternoon after the comet that it was watching slammed into it.
It now appears that the impact with the probe has caused the comet to shift direction, allowing it to collide with the Deep Impact spacecraft, and putting it on a direct course for Earth.
Scientists now realise that by getting "under the skin" of comet Tempel 1, they will gain not just new information on the Solar System's original composition, but first hand knowlede of how the dinosaurs were wiped out in our corner of the Universe millions of years ago.

Re: Comet Impact achieved
Very impressive pics indeed.
I was talking about this story on air this morning when doing the newspaper reviews.
It is going to be interesting to hear the press conference being given out about this later this morning.

Scientists now realise that by not getting any telemetry information back from Tempel 1 that in actual fact they had sent an actual "Washing Machine" to the comet.
Investigations are underway into the embarrassing mix-up. The make and model are as yet unknown.

Is obvious what model - to break through an icy comet would obviously have required a Hot Point

Re: Comet Impact achieved
Technically that's a brand, not a model.

Re: Comet Impact achieved
Don't most brands of washing machine end up getting sent back to Comet?

Re: Comet Impact achieved
If they can crash a probe into a comet, why not land a probe on a comet and piggyback the comet into deep space? Sounds like a cheap(ish) way to get a long distance, as long as you can minimise the landing impact.

I hope it didn't go down your shirt - your washing machine's just been bounced of a comet
