Hubble locates the Eye of Sauron

Quote:
Even the Hubble Space Telescope must have done a double-take when it snapped this spectacular image, looking for all the world like the Great Eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Hubble's picture of the off-centre ring of dust around Fomalhaut, one of the nearest and brightest stars in the sky, offers the best evidence yet that a planet, or planets, is orbiting the star.

That is sure one amazing image, I just wish we have the technology to go look at it closer.

I'm glad we don't - we'd proabably end up destroying it

Re: Hubble locates the Eye of Sauron

That is true to a point, but how do we know have the human race ever lived in the stars??

I mean we are on a crowded planet, I would perhaps like to know if we was on the Moon Mars, and Alpha Centari how we would go.

Re: Hubble locates the Eye of Sauron

presumably they didn't know it looked like that, before they cancelled the light from the star - it must have been very exiting to see such a stunning image, for the first time.

And yet they don't seem to want to keep Hubble functioning properly no matter how many amazing images it shows

Aye lets spend money on cruise missiles, and destruction instead of bettering ourselves and making something of this stupid race.

Re: Hubble locates the Eye of Sauron

The US Senate have given NASA funding for a repair mission in 2006 so it's ok for a little while but at some point they are going to stop funding it's upkeep which is a shame

And the shuttle will start a new mission on the 13th..Means it will be easier to repair Hubble in the future.

In the latter case, we'd melt. Alpha Centauri is a star...

As for the picture, it's a classic case of human aesthetics being overlaid on an essentially physical phenomenon. Pretty, but of zero importance to the human race compared to, say, AIDS.

The senate took lokng enough to ok funding for a mission in 2006 Link, there is no guarantee of funding for 2007 which means Hubble may not last long past the end of 2013. It's already been in use for much longer than expected and unless it receives funding for future repairs Hubble will be out of action after 2013 I'm afraid
