I hate to spoil the nice little party here and all the excitement, but this article was even more fascinating:

£220 billion stolen by Nigeria's corrupt rulers by David Blair in the Telegraph 25/06/05

You are not raining on my parade. I was born in Nigeria and I have despaired continually at the apparent connivance with the corrupt government of Nigeria for the last 40 years by so called democracies.

Re: Nigeria to get $18bn debt relief

ive said this before just get the rulers out of there, why cant bush blair or the UN just eject them out of the country like they did to saddam, if we really want world peace and poverty to be rid of its the only solution and yes i know its not the right way but until radical reform is made in the governments of these countries these leechs then im afraid throwing money at this plight will not save many people, or reform the country to educate peopel too because people such as mugabe will just take away people livelihoods.

No intention to rain on any parade, having lived in Africa myself I know rain is water and water is life. Agreed it takes two to party, clearly errors were made by the UK and of course the multi-nationals and arms traders need to share blame. I suppose the Nigerian Civil War/Biafran war was a sample of how the big powers east, west and south got involved for narrow reasons.

I really do hope and pray that Nigeria now can turn the corner and develop prosperity for all the people.

I'm a great fan of Chinua Achebe.

I know its easy to jump to a conclusion. I am still very friendly with a woman of Nigerian descent living in this country, at first I was very wary of her due to the 419 scams etc.

She is a very nice person but it just goes to show that it made me think because she said she was from Nigeria, if she had said any other African country I probably wouln't of been quite so wary.

I know it was bad on my part to think like that, but the amount of scams involving emails from Nigeria does make people think like that. I wonder however if they are that bad in comparison to people from other poor African countries who are trying to make a buck illegaly.

Re: Nigeria to get $18bn debt relief

I thought this link from a Nigerian newspaper was interesting as it says a little more in regard to its importance. it gives a breakdown of money owed to countries of the Paris club:

Nigeria Gets $20bn Debt Pardon
