Nothing to declare
BBC
Quote:
A Customs officer has been jailed for 15 years for using his position to help smuggle millions of pounds of cocaine into Britain through Gatwick Airport.
Richard Riley, 53, of Dulwich, south-east London, used £125,000 in pay-offs to fund a lavish lifestyle, Southwark Crown Court heard.
He passed on confidential information, arranged drug runs from the Caribbean and ushered couriers through Customs.
Riley admitted conspiracy to smuggle drugs and money laundering.
His wife Marjorie, 51, who helped launder the money, has also admitted her part in the operation and was given 180 hours community service.

Re: Nothing to declare
Yes I was just reading that on the BBC site not long ago. I wonder how many more of them have turned bad. And as you say, can't trust anyone these days.

Re: Nothing to declare
Well there is always good and bad in every profession. I don't think customs would be much different.

Re: Nothing to declare
You have to wonder what is done to monitor customs staff, bit like a "who polices the police??" situation. Obvioulsy any security/ control based role is open to abuse but how did this go on for so long without someone becoming suspicious?

I think Customs monitor themselves, they are a shrewd organisation.
Plus you get what's coming if you abuse your postion with them, hence Riley's fifteen year sentence.

Re: Nothing to declare
i beleive all he actually did was let people know when he was on shift so that they could arrange to get through customs. The guy should be fed with the stuff he let into the country
