grow old faster by.....
scientists have found that smoking and obesity can biologically age people.
smoking can acccelerate the ageing process by 4.6 years however with obesity it was 9 years.
Quote:
The researchers looked at telomeres - strips of DNA that cap the end of chromosomes and appear to protect and stabilise them.
Telomeres shorten each time a cell divides, until there is nothing left, making cell division less reliable and increasing the risk of disorders. This happens naturally with ageing.

I'd agree that it is obvious that smoking and being fat isn't going to do you any good. However, this is quantitative and as Tony's latest gurus, McKinsey, say, "Everything can be measured, and what gets measured gets managed".

I don't care any more. I'm sick of hearing conflicting views about everything. Wine is good for your heart in small amounts, next day it's not. Chocolate contains good parts and when eaten in moderation is very healthy, next day it is the spawn of satan. Jesus Christ, I don't know about anybody else, but with me the people who give all this advice are really losing their credibility.

I cannot, but I am skinny, have given up smoking & can breathe much better, than 'before' - I don't think I will ever need a 'puffer' again, for example - give it a try my mate

One of the "Celeb" magazines (you know, the ones that tend to print stories like "XYZ star is looking a bit porky this week") recently did a feature on "celebrity skinnies" ie "XYZ star is looking a bit *THIN* this week!"
Ye gods, how petty can these people be? If you aren't *exactly* perfect, they're going to get on your case just to sell some more of their rags, no matter *what* effect it might have influencing readers into excessively dieting

Re: grow old faster by.....
Over the years I have been registered with 14 GP's in a variety of areas. All of them have been skinny non smokers except one who was a fat non smoker.
I only ever seem to consult the GP when either 1) my right ear succumbs to a draughty environment & requires drops prescribed, or 2) my tonsils flare up due to contact with someone in the winter that has tonsillitus and I need amoxycillin to kill the local infection.
Inevitably, having looked up my history over 40+ years, the GP (who has never met me before) reluctantly dispenses the drops/antiboiotics along with a lecture about not smoking and 'do try to lose some weight old chap, you are a big fellow' I am cured in 2 days and the GP, bless him, dies soon after.
About 3 years later I get the old itchy ear or discomfort swallowing, ring up the Surgery, wait while they dig in the archives and discover the GP who saw me last has passed on, but I can have an appointment with Dr. Newbie-Lecturer and the cycle is repeated.
I accept one of these days the Doctor will be right and will gleefully put the cause of my demise as excess weight and smoking.
