I'm not saying they got off scot-free but had it been the average man in the street, they would have a LOT more than 180 hours of planting trees.

Don`t forget that they were acting as civilians on a night out and not "on the job", so to speak, so they should be sentenced as civilians!
Don`t get me wrong, i`m not sticking up for them! 
They should set an example in or out of uniform, desk job whatever etc, etc.
