This weekend will mark the 60th Anniversary of VE Day one of the
most Momentous days in the history of the world. after almost 6
years of Bloodshed and killing the likes of Which the world had never
seen before Peace fall across europe. i will ask you now to join with me
in Thanking the many man and woman who made this Possible to tham
we own are lives.

Europe Celebrates VE day.
And where was I ? - on a Troopship entering Bombay Harbour. At least we did get a bottle of beer to celebrate (Troopships were dry). From Bombay I embarked on an extended tour of the Indian sub-continent eventually reaching the banks of the Irrawaddy river in Burma.
Fortunately for me, somebody realised that I shouldn’t be there at all, so I embarked on another tour of the Indian sub-continent in the reverse direction until I reached Delhi, where I should have been in the first place.
There is a serious point to this. The fact that there was still a bitter and very bloody war still continuing in the Far East does seem to be forgotten in many commentaries, and many more good men gave their lives out there.
So while we remember those who did so much for us in Europe, we should also remember those who also did as much if not more in the Far East.

Good point Joe................Another point to remember is that the 'liberation' of Europe marked the beginning of about 60 years of communist subjugation of the Baltic states and many Eastern European countries- a subjugation that resulted in the deaths of at least 20 million Europeans and which has left a lasting mark on those countries populations and infrastructure.

How? Barring direct military action like the 1968 Prague uprising and the 1956 Hungarian one, is this just due to lower health standards and life expectency?

Just had a text from my mother in Berlin, where's she's having a short city break - the city is at a standstill due to, er, neo-Nazi demonstrations.

(She being half-German Jewish, I told her to wear her yellow star with pride - I got back the message 'Heil dem deutschen Volk').

So while remembering the defeat of fascism in 1945, the battle is ongoing today. The biggest tribute you can give those who fought in WW2 is to fight the same battle today.

You have got to be joking.............go and read up on Stalins purges & mass deportations to Siberia.
