A bad misunderstanding with a nasty end result yes, but vigilantism?
I don't think so anyway....

Isn't vigilantism taking the law in to your own hands?

Re: For those who condone mob justice....
Are we talking about Mr Townsend taking the law into his own hands with the table leg, or the father with the iron bar? I wander what would have happened to the boy if NEITHER of these two had acted.

Re: For those who condone mob justice....
My point is about Mr Townsend - as with most 'mob justice' the facts and rarely researched. Remember the paediatrician having her house vandalised?

Re: For those who condone mob justice....
This is slightly different as he thought someone has attacking in his son and acted in the heat of the moment. Mob justice is a more calculated attack on someone people believe to be in the wrong, usually without facts. But this was a father in the haste of the moment

Re: For those who condone mob justice....
This was a tragic misunderstanding. I don't think it was an act of a vigilante, just a father defending his son and reading the situation incorrectly.

if the police and the magistrates did there job properly, there would be no need for vigilantism.

My thoughts exactly.
It would be vigilantism if there had been a man going round beating up children (for example), & the locals organised a gang/group to go after him & give him a good shoeing.
Haste of the moment?-yes, vigilantism?-not in my view.

I don't call hitting someone with an iron bar over the head vigilantism, not in this context anyway.

Re: For those who condone mob justice....
What would you have done in this situation? If your own son/daughter was about to be bludgeoned with an axe? Would you run in, wait and assess the situation while anything could happen?

You're all missing the moral of the story - that people who try be helpful end up getting hurt. Stay out of it - live a long life

A well meant action "hopefully" gets its own reward!
