It was a skid test graham, you know where they have a chalk charge at the back of the car which goes off when the brakes are hit and then the distance travelled is measured.
When the police did the test they went a heck of a lot further than they expected to.
Listening to the program, the policeman involved suggests that the heat of the tyres braking melts the bitumen on the road and you basically slide along on it.
In cold weather or wet, this stops the bitumen melting and so you stop normally (as you would on a normal surface road in the cold or wet)

Some of the things they covered were totally shocking, mostly the local authorities' inability to admit fault or blame. One guy who lost his wife in a car accident because of the poor road fought the local authority all the way to the high court winning each case as he went. The local authority had known about the dangerous road through the work of a retired civil engineer who'd lost a granddaughter in a previous accident.

As opposed to melting the rubber of your tyres which you slide along when you get that "scream of tyres and cloud of smoke".

Lets see....
Police do skid test, find they go further than they would have expected having done hundreds of skid tests on other roads throughout their years of service to the police force.
No screach of tyres or cloud of smoke suggesting not a rubber issue.
Looks at road surface and notices stones are covered in bitumin which melts at heats produced in heavy braking.
Puts two and two together. Is backed up by several studies in other countries.

Um, exaclty what was your point? Because it sounds to me like you're saying the problem is with tyres and not the road surface...

Lets see, if they had decent tyres and ABS I reckon the results would be much different.

Are you suggesting that the police car which was used in the skid test didn't have ABS or decent tyres?

Re: And you thought dry roads were safe...

The cars that they use have good tyres and the ABS turned off.
