China closes the net
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4263525.stm
Quote:
Chinese authorities closed 12,575 net cafes in the closing months of 2004, the country's government said.
According to the official news agency most of the net cafes were closed down because they were operating illegally.
Chinese net cafes operate under a set of strict guidelines and many of those most recently closed broke rules that limit how close they can be to schools.
The move is the latest in a series of steps the Chinese government has taken to crack down on what it considers to
be immoral net use.

Not that they are trying to hinder the Chinese peoples access to free information

I agree, however, the chinese have a very bad record for doing this. People moan (myself included) that what we see an hear in the media is censored, but their government is (apparently) far more controlling than ours.

Re: China closes the net
Is it really surprising that the chinese government would have draconian control of the internet in place? Considering the mindset of the government, and to a certain extent the chinese people themselves its only natural that this would take place. So what, a few cyber-cafes got closed down for breaking government regulations. Better that than being draged away and either a) shot and your family being made to pay for the bullet, b) being tortured for years before being released, c) being arrested and sent to a labour camp.

Re: China closes the net
Why is it that all communist countries tend to become crazy totalitarian states?
Thought marxism was just the state controlling the economy, not the whole aspect of the citizen's lives?

But in order to control the economy to that extent, you have to control everyones lives......otherwise they will just go and start up capitalist enterprises on the side

That's communism for you. The same nanny state that people berate us for trying to oppose here.
It really is an affront to decency that China is given any serious standing in the world community.

I suppose. But how is halting people's access to the internet stopping free enterprise? And what was the point of the Soviet Union destroying the church?

What and loose out on a market of 1.25 billions consumers, are you mad.
As long as wages are dirt cheap in china, or toys can be made for no pay by slave labourers, do you really think democratic nations will stop trading with them? FFS, France is making tens of millions of dollars a year upgrading the avionics and fire control systems of chinese airforce combat aircraft.
As long as greed holds such a tight control on humans, people will be repressed.
