Car share lanes
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/b...ts/4083011.stm
What's the betting that BMW drivers will assume they will be allowed to use them no matter how many people are in the car
They have something like this in the states, my mate used to use the car share lanes by dressing up a mannequin and putting it in his passenger seat

Re: Car share lanes
Great idea, at least that way there will be one empty lane on the road.....

Re: Car share lanes
It wont work. It only takes one car travelling in that lane at less than the speed of others to start to cause tailbacks, and thus encourage lane hopping.

Re: Car share lanes
They do a lot in the US, and there are big signs encouraging other drivers to report those who are violating the car pool lanes.
What a lot of drivers do over there is buy blow-up dolls to put in the passenger seat!

Re: Car share lanes
Great idea if the busses can use them, like having permanent bus lanes everywhere.
Fab, I hope it comes off.

Re: Car share lanes
The ones in MA have concrete bollards separating the HOV lane from the rest of the lanes so no lane hopping there, it's a fab way to get out of town fast.

It's dual use; perfectly acceptable practice.

I guess you don't drive much then. Bus lanes are another joke, a quick method of causing huge traffic jams, and what effing use are 24hr bus lanes when buses don't run 24 hrs

The motorways are already very busy with three lanes, so you think it's a good idea to force most people into two lanes, and leave one lane for the fortunate few (most people are on their own in a car for a very good reason, usually work related). I can just imagine what my employer will say (next time I have to drive down this section to our Welwyn office) if I said i'm taking someone else with me just so I have two in the car.
This is nothing more than yet another policially correct idea dreamed up by complete boneheads who have no idea how the real world (outside their cosy little office) actually works.

Or that they don't even bother to *think* that there may be someone else from their work who lives close to them who *also* drives in their own car.
Personally I think that anything that encourages people to get out of their selfish metal boxes is a good thing.

I think they're planning to put this in place as the fourth lane of the proposed M1 expansion, so there would continue to be three lanes for all traffic, plus an extra one for car pool.
