Re: beeb cuts 3,000 job
Might be able to afford a house in West London - mostly BBC people round there. My other half got out of the Beeb a few years ago - their contracts are absolutely watertight for the employees, so I'd be interested in seeing how they go about this (wads of cash, I expect).

Re: beeb cuts 3,000 job
mmmm, 3,000 jobs divided by the cost of a tv license = a big hike in costs ?????

Re: beeb cuts 3,000 job
Well as a content man I think this is a good move. The BBC has become a little too like the NHS in that there are too many marketeers, heads of toilet-rolls and the like and more content people means even better programmes - which is exactly the remit of the BBC.
Of course it's not nice to unleash this news two weeks before Christmas, which is down to appaling man-management skills, so my thoughts are with those who may be affected.

Re: beeb cuts 3,000 job
If the workers move from London to Manchester, where are the savings on those workers?
As wages up here are far less, surely they will be forced to take a drop in wages?
Also, with so many job losses, I can't help thinking that there will be far less experienced people making the programms & hence they might get a bit worse for a while until newer ones are trained up well.
Also, where are 1800 people + families going to get houses in Manchester?
What about those that have families that cannot move because of the childrens schooling etc?
IMO = bad move.

Re: beeb cuts 3,000 job
To be honest, over the years the Beeb has become bloated, slow to react and set in it's ways on a lot of areas. Because of years of guaranteed funding they have allowed themselves to become lazy in their management style and in their thinking, all of a sudden they have realised that they have to compete to keep that funding and it's the staff that are going to pay

I think that it is a major upheaval and very unfortunate for the personnel involved, especially hearing the news just before Christmas.
However, it does appear to make economic sense moving the departments to Manchester where the overheads are less and the potential for making savings is greater and on an ongoing basis.
Given the disruption to staff, it's a pity really that this was not thought of previously as most things are cheaper in the provinces. Mind you, will this have the effect of pushing up house prices in Manchester?
Hopefully, once matters are resolved, we will see a return to the previously high standards of production for which the BBC was once famous.
